It signals when to send current to the spark plugs so that the plugs can ignite the gas. If you research it some on the board you'll know.

Navy Blue Metallic- '00 Formy A4
It was the LT1's distributer before they went to distributersless on the LS1. It was driven off the cam I believe, and was located on the front of the motor behind the water pump.
I did alot of research on the LT1 when I was looking into a C4 Vette a few months ago, turns out these are a common problem on these cars. GM could have done a much better job designing them. What happens is that the unit isn't sealed, so water and crap gets into it and ruins it over time. Especially if the water pump goes, because then the coolant runs right over the Opti. MSD came out with a replacement version of it not too long ago, it's sealed and is supposed to eliminate the weak spots of the stocker.

Anyways, what the car is doing is when its all warmed up it will misfire. Then if you really step on it it will run fine until you let off the gas and then try to just cruise at a constant speed, then it will start misfiring again.
