Water pump going out/switching to electric?

My water pump is taking a piss like nothing else, so I decided to replace it with one of those electric pumps. I have an LT1 and I've heard rumors of gains anywhere from 5-30. Not to concerned with that, what I am concerned with is that the oe pump is cam driven and the hole needs to be plugged when converting to an electric. Does anybody have an electric pump? How hard is it to plug the hole? (No jokes about that last question)

I did one on a 1997 lt1 and the hardest part was getting the old center section out of the pump housing. As for pluging the hole you just remove teh shaft drive and let it ride. The new pump fits into the old housing and covers the hole up.Their is nothing that can get in that hole.

So why does everyone say you have to plug the hole?
