Need advice on a daily driver

I have a 2002 zo6 I drive 17 miles to work and back. Im sick of just sitting in traffic idling this car. Im looking for a automatic car or truck a beater so to speak. I only have 1000 to 1800 to spend. What are some good reliable vehicle makes?

i also have a 1990 accord LX but i paid $1800 for it and it has 220,XXX miles on it. The car is mint inside and out though and i have every single record of every maintenance and oil change done to it. It gets 30-34 mpg no matter how i drive it and its actually a really nice car, especially considering its age. you cant beat a toyota or honda for a daily driver- super reliable and great on gas.

Honestly...if you dont have a truck I would make the daily driver a small reliable pickup for the convience alone

Well if you are from the north where there is alot of snow and ice, you may want to consider something 4-wheel drive.

Go on ebay and look up international harvester. I drive a 79 Scout II daily since 98 I got it with 49k miles on it for 1500 and it now has 295000 My first majer repair happened at 246000 the valve covers were leaking. I have done the normal stuff tires, shocks, exhaust regular wear and tare stuff.Parts are easy and cheap to get just don't expect auto zone to know what it is. They do rust so find one from a dry area. And as a bonus the roof's come off and they have pickup tops for them so you can have a great 4x4 a cool convertible a pickup and an suv all in one vehicle.

Any G.M. with the 3.8V6 is a good choice, those motors last as do the truck 4.3 V6 engines. I have seen many go 200k+ miles and the automatic is also reliable as long as all have been maintained correctly.

The old subaru's are great with the AWD. I had an old 84 GL that ran perfect until I busted the frame hopping through ditches and farm fields to fast. I had that cool brush gaurd and spoiler on top too. I picked it up for 600 and drove I mean beat the crap out of it for 6 years. There was way over 300k on it.

Agree, bullet proof, my 98 Buick Regal GS is "modified" with 14psi of boost and i drive it daily. Excellent motors, also my S-10 4.3 has 370,000 on it and i've never been inside the motor or trans.

you are better off looking in the local bargain news / paper than auto trader

thats based on my experience looking for a beater (still looking), although i found my SS on autotrader

I agree. My daily driver is an '88 Buick LaSabre with the 3.8L. It only has 78,000 miles so far, but runs like a champ. My uncle had one just like it that was still running strong when he sold it with over 200,000 miles on it.

+1. I picked up a 96 Explorer XLT from a friend of the family for only $2500, I can put all kinds of stuff in it that would cause a headache trying to squeeze in the Camaro...lol

Look at Ford Rangers, Chevy S-10's, etc...

Explorers = new ball joints every 20k. When you get bored with the Ranger or S-10 they are fun to put V8's in.

My ex had an old Toyota pickup that had 240k miles and was still ticking. He also had a '92 S-10 which I really liked with 140k miles before he got rid of it. And since I always had cars, it was nice to be able to have his to haul stuff in.
