    Car That Needs No Tranny?

So I was talking to ?someone? about ?Something? and he told me about this car (I believe its an Import )that has no tranny! it uses "something" I had previously heard about that car but did not really pay attention. Can someone explain how this setup works and who makes that specific car?

Could be referring to Audi's continuously variable (CV) transmission or possibly to an AC powered car.

Well, without a transmission of some sort, how else does the power get to the ground?

Even a Continuously Variable Transmission is still a transmission...is just doesn't necessarily 'shift' like a 3-4-5-6 speed automatic.

Electric motors do make the most torque at zero RPM's, so it could be possible that an electric car would be direct drive. But anything else needs to be able to decouple the drive train from the engine (clutch/converter) and vary the ratio to have starting power and reasonable top speed.

If nothing else you need a transmission just to be able to change the direction of the drive shaft for reverse.

I am a tech at a GM/Chrysler dealership and there is a lot of new models that has the new CVT transmission which is probobly what they were talking about. It is still a type of tranny even though it doesnt have gears.

Flo if you are a tech then maybe you will be able to explain some kind of details? I work at a parts place and when I looked up the car by application I went to [transmission] and it said N/A as in not appliable as in it "does not contain" a transmission. But thats not my point! My question was "how the "non tranny" operates"

What kind of vehicle is it? If it is an import then there is no telling what the Japs have come up with now

I cant remember what car it is but I remember looking it up by application but could not seem to find the tranny listed anywhere
