Black- 1998 Camaro Z28
98 Z28 clutch fluid low, won't go in gear... HELP!
My clutch fluid has a really slow leak. It leaks so slowly that I didn't even know what those spots on my garage floor were until now. They're already dry so I thought they were old spots.
Bottom line is, my M6 won't go on into any gear with the clutch depressed so I need to at least get it in gear long enough to drive it about 8 miles to my tranny shop. I added fluid and pumped the clutch but it still won't go into gear.
The manager at the shop told me to pump the clutch about 5 times and let it rest a couple hours, then pump it again. do this several times over the course of the evening. he says I might have air in the line and by pumping the clutch pedal I can maybe get the air to "burp" out of the line. Maybe... He said this might or might not work.
You guys have any suggestions for me? I might have to call a tow truck in the morning if I can't get it in gear.Last edited by Motrv8d Steve; 04-05-2006 at 04:24 PM.

Two things - if you have mity vac you can bleed it very easily.
- if you don't and your only going 8 miles - depending on traffic lights etc., you could just start it in gear and go. Once it's moving it's easy to finess it from gear to gear with no clutch.

I dont have a mity vac.
it's kinda hard but I know what you mean about driving without a clutch.
but it's hard right now to get it in any gear, so it's gonna be an adventure tomorrow morning, looks like.

It really sounds like it is time to upgrade to 01-02 master & slave cylinders.

You might be able to put it in gear with the engine off and start it in reverse to back it out of the garage. Then cut the power in the street and put it into first gear then start it back up.
But as stated above, the newer master/slave kit should fix and resolve the factory weakness in the older models.Hammer - hammertime.us

thanks guys for the tips. I made it to the trans shop exactly how hammertime said. I put it in 2nd gear (I was able to coast out of my driveway downhill). and then I just babied it all the way to the shop. I mentioned to the trans shop manager about the 01-02 master slave upgrade and he said he would look into it. Is there anything else I can say specifically to him about this upgrade? I've never heard of it before.

Actually, I think the new assemblies superceded the old parts.

The 97-2000 LS1 clutch master and slave cylinders had some issues. GM addressed them when they created the Z06 and then implemented the fix on all cars produced after that. Accordingly, they did away with the old parts, and onlly the new ones are available now.
Depending on who you ask, the new parts do away with the restriction that people remove with the drill mod.
