    Crane Cams write up.

Nice little link on what crane cams did to a stock ws6 (m6) to achieve 401hp of streetable, dd, power.

That was a nice little write-up.

Crane has always made good valvetrain products.

Vinci is good with the LS1 also.

    I have a Vinci-Crane programmer that I'm happy with
but I would love to have a setup like that Street-Shark.

Thankyou California for your stringent emissions laws. ( sarcastic )

Boy 266 HP, that has to be the lowest dyno numbers for a stock car I've ever seen.
My Lid and Catback `98 M6 Formula made 300 at the rear wheels with 109K miles and the original clutch.

400 RWHP F-Bodies are pretty common these days.
Cam only cars with all the bolt ons can get there very easily
I personally don't put much stock in Dyno #'s. Too many people use them as bragging rights.
In a drag race the more powerful car is not always the winner.

While you do make some valid points...

Most of us realize that dyno numbers aren't neccessarily the last word.
However they are a good empiracle measurement of before and
after results inaddition to being a unit of measurement.

Peak horsepower numbers are not always the best indication of real world
performance. With that said 400 whp is pretty darn good for
    the modifications on that car.

I haven't seen cams and headers alone accomplish 400 whp.
    Maybe mid to upper 300s.

One thing I didn't see mentioned in that article, nor did I see
an indication as to what dyno was used on those runs.

Mustang ?, Dyno Jet ?, Dyno Dynamics ?

If it was a Mustang dyno, those read much lower.

Yeah it's not a bad area for Southern California.

My wife and I have considered moving north.

Santa barbara and san luis areas are extreamly nice,

Lots of open straight aways and some good curvy roads too.

    I agree
This topic comes up all the time amongst me and a couple of my friends
We all have M6 cars with lids and catbacks and would like to get cam and header set ups. Well the magic number is always 400RWHP and how we would like to be there.
I put this out to them once. If you spent the money added the parts and after your tune the car only did 385 at the wheels but was everything you wanted ran strong and sounded badass, would you be dissapointed ?

    The answer was NO.

Obviously a set of heads would put you over the mark but IMO I don't need that much power for a DD.

If I had somewhere near 385 whp I would be real happy.

For that extra approximent 15 whp, those heads are what most likely
put it over the top towards the 400 whp mark.

Those heads would be a good bit of work and extra money.

As most of us here I have the typical bolt on power adders.

At this point I would be happy with some long tube headers and high flow cats but our California emission are so strict.

I've considered a CARB legal Vortech or Procharger.

    I do agree.

Heads are nice if you are looking for that extra couple of hp....BUT

If you are decide to spend the dough on heads why not do the rest of the internals while your at it......

Reason being is because most of us here are DD's, IMO we just want to be the quickest or one of the quickest cars in our town.....not the fastest in the west, east, north, or south.

When you truly break it down.....

    HP per $

    Lid $80 - $100 = .19 - .1 HP/$

    MAF $290 - $350 = .05 - .04 HP/$

    Cam's $280 - $400 = .1 - .075 HP/$

    .................................................. ..

    Heads $1,000 - $2,500 = .05 - .026 HP/$

Honestly... i can't justify getting the same results from smaller mod's as i can from the big one's. Granted you can exceed 400RWHP by doing them however your losing your DD ability. And thats if you ask me.

I am at 364RWHP with an almost identical program of modifications. My cam is the Old Man's cam, which is a lot milder. I wonder if that could account for 37hp!?.

I just don't see how they gained 50hp from a lid, MAF and a CAT back(was I missing any thing from that stage?). That just sounds to high. Hell I hear new MAFs are nothing but trouble for a lot of people.

I noticed that they are winding all the way to 7,000 RPM. That seems pretty high for a DD. I have my limiter set at 6,200 RPM and max power comes at 5,800 RPM. I guess I will have to be satisfied with lower numbers, and an engine that may last longer.
