What is this filter for?

Looking at the motor to the right of the intake, there is a blake house that comes up, has a little filter on the end. I just noticed mine is missing. Is this hose to the radiatior, I couldnt tell exactly. Is this hurting performance before I get it fixed?

correct me if im wrong but without looking i think it goes to the AIR system. On a system without a lid, it hooks into the bottom of the baffel.

Is your car stock? If so, then it's not missing the filter. In stock form, the hose would connect to a hole on the right side of the air lid. In the other direction, the hose leads to an emissions component commonly called the AIR system. The filter in the pic you provided is there because an aftermarket air lid was installed that doesn't have the hole to connect the hose to. So, the owner put the small filter on the end of the hose instead.

The pic is actually my car, it has an slp lid. So should I just go by a small filter to put on there?

That's one option. If you don't have to worry about emissions, and you have the ability to delete the AIR emissions codes from your PCM, you can just eliminate the AIR system all together. That would eliminate the need for a filter, remove a good bit of tubing out of the engine bay, and remove a few pounds of the front of the car. The AIR system includes a small electric air pump (at the other end of the hose) in the lower left front corner of the car that could be removed. You would also need blockoff plates to cover the connections the AIR system makes to your exhaust manifolds.

Someone ordered the wrong slp lid for your car...they sell a 00+ version that has a hole already cut out and it comes with a grommet, some hose, plastic elbow and coupler. It's a lot cleaner looking...almost looks factory.

But yea....like mbrownin said you can buy a breather or just remove the a.i.r. system all together. If you don't like the look of the tube and breather, just cut the tube off closer to the pump and then put the breather on.

We do not have to worry about emissions here in DC, I think I will cut the hose and eliminate the AIR system as you all mentioned. When you say cut the tubbing off closely, what exactly do you mean a breather?
