SES (Service Engine Soon) is noramally tripped by some mileage milestone to indicate a service is due.......Service Engine(Vehicle) Light means anything from a loose gascap to low windshield washer fluid.......

Service engine soon (SES) is when there is a code thrown, most of the time a emissions code. If the SES is blinking on and off then their is a misfire code and should not be driven. Service vehicle code is like ABS or traction control, etc....

Thats what i was thinking, i dont currently have the light on but if i did, could i read a code with my diablo? I retuned my z today and the service vehicle light came on but then shut off when i killed the ignition and has not come on since. so no big deal. thanks for the help guys.

Predator definitely reads/clears SES lights (P-codes), I read cars with mine all the time - good question about the Service Vehicle (B/C?-codes) - never had an occasion to try it. Plug it in and see if any codes are stored - I'm thinking it only reads P-codes.

Ya got it backwards bro ;)
SES light is a code, SVS is generally a mileage generated code, or in some cases can indicate a body control issue.

Sorry to bring this back, but does the SES light cause the computer to go into a "safe mode"? I heard it pulls timing and you lose up to 30 hp. If so, mine's on, and I still whacked a bunch of decently fast cars.

Depends on the code, some don't affect performance at all. On A4 cars the PCM can even put the tranny into "limp mode." What code are you throwing?

I don't know the exact one...It's for one of the converters going bad.

If it's P0420 or P0430 and you're under 80K and stock, cats are covered under the federal emissions warranty. Can also be a bad post cat 02 sensor but it's rare. Post cat 02 codes shouldn't affect performance unless the cat is clogged.
