My 02 ws6 has a lot of wax on it. How do I remove it so I can put a good wax on it? What is a good wax to use on Black?

One option to remove old wax is by using a tiny, a tiny, bit of dawn dish soap in a bucket of water and give your car a wash with it. Only use a little bit and then hit your car up with a nice polish and wax afterwards.

Without question the Zaino system is the best on the market. And it really pops on black cars like ours. It's has everything you need for a complete showroom quality detail including a clay bar, all the waxes and cleaners, leather cleaner and conditioner and more. You have to order it online, do a Google search for "Zaino" and it's the first link. (Not affliated with this company, just a happy user)
For over-the-counter wax, I found Maguire's NXT is the best for high gloss shine. It's in a purple bottle with a green top. I use this on my 10 year old Camry, which is bright red and shines it up like new. The problem I notice is it only lasts for about 5 washes then it starts to break down and a rewax is necessary. But for the results I get it doesn't matter, and it gives me quality time spent with my cars. :yup:

While I agree Zaino is the tits, it technically isn't a considered a wax, but a polish. Zaino shine is worth the time and $$ though

I like Tropi-care. Easy to use
I've always used dish soap to strip old wax, heard good things about Zaino too but it is sort of expensive.

Do not use dish soap, it harms the Clear coat. no matter how little its still very acidic. Claybar and Corn Starch works best at removing wax, then just wash the car with CAR WASH soap. Zaino is nice but I don't use it anymore. Meguires Tec Wax Paste works better and has lasted longer IMO on Navy Blue Metallic and much cheaper than the whole zaino experience

It's a synthetic wax, polishes contain abrasives, when Sal started making "waxes" he called his product a "polish", because the only "waxes" that were being made at that time were carnauba waxes, and he wanted to show how different his product was. :)

I take mine through the touchless car wash and it strips all the wax off.

zaino by far the best i ever used on my black baby.its really not all that expensive considering one bottle of it goes a long long way.you have to order it from www.zainostore.com.i suggest getting a claybar zfx z2,z5,z6.For maximum gloss, follow Z-5 Show Car Polish with one or more coats of Z-2 Show Car Polish. Z-2 will provide an even higher gloss finish than Z-5. Always use Z-6 Gloss Enhancer Spray between each and every coat of Z-5 and Z-2 .the z-fx is good for multi coating in one day.trust me it will cost ya in the beginning for all the stuff but should last you at least 2 years before you have to reorder.i had my stuff since june of 05 and i clean my car alot at least 2 times a month and i havent even put a dent in my supplies.trust me well worth

I use the meguiars 3 step, after using the scrub use step 2 the polish once then step 3 the wax to protect the polish. wait a week and put another coat of wax on. That lasts a long while.

A small amount of paint thinner on a rag will remove the wax easily and is safer than using dish detergant. I have seen detergent ruin paint jobs before.

Do not use paint thinner at all, it will seriously ruin the clear coat

I agree with the above on not using thinner. Somebody above also talked about using a Claybar and Corn Starch. I would'nt touch on that either by no means.....( the corn starch)
Alittle dish soap would more than be good enough.....
How do you guys know you have so much wax built up anyway.

Dawn is too acidic and will strip that clear coat right off also. Paint thinner is a no no, it's chemical purpose is to thin paint, before long you're going to have a rag the color of you car and wonder where the shine went, no matter how little you use. I suggested corn starch because its been used for decades, detailers use it to get the wax off and using it with a claybar also help pick up contaminents stuck in the paints surface without harming the paint at all.

Have you tried this on your paint ??????????
I don't think I would go by what detailers did decades ago.
Claybar.......Sure
Corn starch ?????? Boy I would'nt...

A little late but what not...
Use a proven paint cleaner, followed by a polish to remove all of the old wax. Claying by itself will not do it. For simplicity you can use an Over The Counter product such as Meguiars or Mothers. You can do it by hand, but a porter cable buffer will do a great job at removing the wax and prepping the paint.
Once its nice and clean, then you will be ready for wax. Good luck

A little dish soap is not going to hurt your clearcoat. Does anyone have any idea how durable todays clearcoats are?? If they are strong enough to handle the sun pounding on them day after day then a bath with dish soap once a month is childs play.
I bought the Zaino kit and I was very impressed with it. If you are thinking about getting that kit plan on spending the better part of the day following all the steps and mixing their new accelerator with the polish and so forth. I just use good ol' fashion New Finish. Nothin fancy but after a good wash with a non stripping car wash and my red GTO looks perfect.

Dawn dishwashing detergent takes the old wax off...
Then go over your car with a rubbing compound...then a good polish....
finish it off with a good Carnuba Wax....
Step 1. Wash it with Dawn Dishwashing detergent.....

Step 2. Go over it with a rubbing compund...

Step 3. A good polish....

Step 4. Finish that big black bitch up with a good Carnuba Wax....

I dont care what products....after 30+ years I have found out there isnt much difference at all between Zaino and Turtle Wax...it is all in how often and how you do the prep work.....
