iv been debating on whether or not i should install a shift kit on my 98 trans am
when im on it my car goes all the way to the red line so do you think that it is necessary

i been thinkin about a stall converter also since every1 i know seems to think without my car being a stick its slower than it should be in a quarter cuz i cant dump the clutch its slower i dont beleive that but i do beleive with a stall converter i may be faster out the box

so what do u think stall converter or shift kit or both?

The transmission is very programmable. Mine has the HD basket & clutches, 4600 stall, and no shift kit. Just programmed !!! Still the original 4L60e that came with the car and I run high 10's ... When you do program it, you have to leave it in drive or overdrive for the program & shift points to work.

Wow, big question !!! LOL !!!
I have a new motor now, but my stock motor ran a best of 10.72 with a 1.36 / 60'..
The bigest power gainer I think was porting the heads, ported intake, and long tube headers. cam & stall of coarse... Alot of bolt ons. 150 dry shot. Moser rear w/ 4.10 gears. alot of suspension work...
Now back to your car... If you do a stall convertor, you want the tranny beafed up some. Have the beast clutch basket installed. The stock one might break. I'd use a 3000 - 3600 locker stall. Great for street and race. Even my 4600 locker is streetable, but a little overboard for a trip...:yup:

awesome u ran a 150 shot? u think non forged pistons hold that fine or would they need to be forged? id love to do most of that but the biggest thing is i would like a supercharger but of course heads cam headers exhaust intake tb and stuff like that would be first prolly will find a used supercharger

i was thinking about nitrous and set the perge out my ram air

That was all on stock bottom end with a cam. Here's a pic of my purge at the headlights !

ya im just worried that the 150 will burn it up no1 has an exact answer for me some say it will eat it up and other say it will burn it up so idk wat to do but that pic looks sweet

im tempted to buy a used ls1 and just build it from the bottom up forge it everything but taking tht block out looks rough

If you pull the tranny first, pull off the front accessorys ( water pump, ect... ) the motor will come out the top fairly easy. I sprayed the 150 shot for four years before a rod bolt pulled... Rev limit was at 7200 rpm... It was the origonal 98 motor, and it blew last fall. Not bad !!! Of coarse, I didn't beat on it !!! LOL !!!

can u change the heads without pulling the block? iwas told u cant cuz it would be hard to torque the head bolts

and 4 years is a long time how many miles was on the motor?

Yes, you can change the heads. It is tight, but can be done. I had around 75K on that motor. I got a block & crank on ebay, then started building a back up motor. Of coarse, mine blew before I had the new one finished...
The one that blew, won the race, then blew while idling back to the pits... At least it didn't go at 7000 rpm !!! It's rebuildable too !!!

A 3500 stall is killer IMO.. Makes the A4 fun as hell to drive with out a shift kit. One thing I would think about is going vacuum modulated with a shift kit. I have a 4000 stall with a shift kit. Not running the 10's like Bill but run solid 11's. And love the feeling when I go WOT... Puts you and keeps you in the seat until you let off.

what else do u have done to make u run the 11s?

for a full weight car, that is about 3700 lbs, it should take around 450 whp to get you solidly into 11's.

500whp will get a very very low 11, maybe even a 10 if you can hook it up.

Jacking the pressure through the electronics should be the last thing you do
Shift kit first and a converter definitely
