Rear end woes

99 SS M6 with a stock rear end. Heard a sort of clunk/clack type noise in neutral from 24-15 mph and has been about 150 miles since. I got sideways out of a gas station today, and now the clunk/clack is definitely a hard knock that shakes the chassis, and now under deceleration and nuetral. Under acceleration no noise. I pulled the driveshaft thinking my input bearing on my almost brand new t56 fragged itself like the last tranny had, but the rear end is the culprit. It free spins 300 degrees, then seizes either direction. JUST changed rear end fluid two days ago, one little chunk of metal the size of a pinky nail clipping with minimal shavings.


SO! I need help with deciding what path to take for rebuilding.....

GEARS I want 3.73 or 3.90ish if I can find them
AXLES definitely want to upgrade
BEARINGS I want quality as well
CARRIER I think mine is shot, what is an economical choice for a Daily driver that puts out ~380rwhp

Should I do the labor myself, or is it worth it to take it to a specialist. I have never rebuilt a whole unit, just swapped gears and axles. How could I measure the tolerances to see if the housing is screwed?

I was just quoted at 2400 shipped to my door for a 9" w/aluminum housing, 31 spline axles with a 3.89 gear. Complete and set up for 4 channel ABS. I think I have 4 channel, but I don't even know. I need to go to my car and check it out......... Oh yeah this price was from quickperformanceracing.

Any better prices available?

definitely go with a 9" or a 12 bolt. Do not rebuild! waste of money unless your just selling it or something

My biggest concern with a 9" is the efficiency and power losses involved with dropping it in.

What type of losses should I see?

I get 25mpg at 88mph on the interstate presently.

Also, what is the weight difference for the 9"? even with the aluminum center, I have a suspicion I am stuffing a chunky girl in the back seat putting the thing in. Anyone know the weights?

You might be able to find it a little cheaper than $2400 if you shop around further, but $2400 isnt bad at all. I have seen people pay a lot more than $2400.

The 9" does weigh the most out of all the potential rearend upgrades for the fbodies, but its the strongest and you shouldn't have any future problems. I am going to be the market for a rearend soon myself, probably going to get a Moser 9" just because I know its the most durable out there. I know it will add more weight and rob a little more HP than the rest, but I prefer the piece of mind and can always find another way to increase HP.
