transmission needs jake brake

I have a friend with a 99' Z28 A4. When he lets off the gas the transmission will not slow the car down. The RPMs drop to idle and it's like he has pushed the clutch in on an M6. Nothing. We have put it in Drive, OD and all the gears. I let off the gas in my car on drive and the motor slows car down on steep hills and corners. He has to use his brakes, always. The tranny has done this for a long time, at least 50k and runs strong. Is this due to a shift kit or tune? There is no stall converter, only exhaust work and tune(I presume) from prior owner. The only benefit, I can assume, is in drag racing: if he lets off the gas it will not slow the car. Also, is there any way to reverse this?

Well in the OD position this is how it should act however there should be braking in the D21 positions most likely either the overun clutch has failed or the hub has broken on the INPUT SPRAG which would in both cases eliminate engine braking in the lower gears, It is however and internal trans issue . Also note if this is a 273 geared car you will feel very little braking in any position except for 1st manually

Wow, thanks. No it has 323s. It is def screwd up in there. What does a rebuilt go for? I pd $2300 for my 02'. w/12k or 12mo warranty. Shop has a good rep too, thank God! Appreciate the info, I will pass it along.

Good deal. Let me see what he wants to do. One other question: I am considering building up a motor to considerable hp. I was told that a truck tranny could be swapped in for my stocker that could handle up to 900hp. Would that be compatible w/ PCM and what would the unit go for $. Shipped? This will not be happening soon. Just doing my homework and pulling out my calculator. :) --- I see the diff transmissions available on your site, what is the price for them? Or is it on there and I am just missing it?

Ok...I see prices now. Sh!t I wish I had known sooner. I wouldn't have had the dumb a$$ rebuild mine. AND I specifically asked if there was a stronger tranny...he just tried to sell me a beefed up rebuild on mine. I will be keeping your number and site. Thanks for the info!
