Rear End Howl

Anybody have this problem: after about driving 10 miles i get a low level howl from the rear end, checked the level it" at the top , if i slowly excellerate the noise goes away or if i let off gas , holding steady speed it"s noisey. 05 a4

If I had a 2005 gto that answer to all of my problems would be warranty. Every problem has the same solution then -drop it off and pick it up

Lots and lots of folks have had this issue....most dealers are replacing the pinion under warranty......the majority of folks have replaced the fluid with Royal Purple 85-140 with the friction modifier in it already and killed the diff whine issue......

Sarge thanks for that info I really didn"t want to bring it in to dealer because of recall on waring buzzers not working i guess they have to do a reflash to turn on this feature / I like it with no warning buzzers going off / seat belts /key in ignition ect. / i will try the fluid change as you said.

you should definatly bring it back to the dealer and have it fixed or replaced worst thing that could happen is new parts. The royal purple might just hide the problem

Well much of the issue has been found in crap diff fluid in the cars when delivered......thus causing the pinion to go south due lack of proper lubrication...also many have had the dreaded single tire burnout as the OEM fluid doesnt allow the posi to lock up correctly.....Amsoil and RP have eliminated this in almost all who have replaced the fluid....

Has this been a problem with the 2004s as well? My car was a factory buyback. The guy who owned before complained enough about this problem and GM actually bought the car back. It then went to the GM Technical Assistance Center for evalutation. It came back with nothing wrong with the car. I bought and they gave me an extra 12 months/12000 mile warranty that covers all, even brakes (so they say).

Yup...same rear end in 04's......GM has a Technical Bulletin out on it...but no recall......

I have noticed before the single tire burnout. That explains it. I think I will make the switch. Any Recommendations.....Amsoil or RP and weight? It is probably a preference.

I ran Amsoil 75-140 with Amsoil friction modifier and it was "better"...Royal Purple 85-140 with the friction modifier already in it and it was totally gone and I have had zero issue since.....NAPA sells the RP for like $7-8 bucks a quart... http://www.royalpurple.com/prodsa/mgeara.html

I changed the rear end oil to the r.p. the noise is all but gone only a slight noise at 45 mph at lite throttle thats it / THIS REALLY WORKS./

a lot of that noise comes from improper pinion backlash also...but changing fluids def help..
