Definitely Motive...
My buddy's 93Z needs a ring and pinion and he's commissioned me to do the rear rebuild. Summit was out of stock on Motive 342's two weeks ago so he was going to order Richmond or Zoom. I told him I would not install either, due to noise issues with them in the past. He waited...lol...

I bought a Precision Gear ring and pinion from Reider Racing's website for my previous G-body car (7.5" 10 bolt). I installed it myself and it was perfectly quite and reliable behind my 400+ ft*ibs 383 stroker. I ran 1.8 - 2.0 60 foot times and 13.1 - 13.3 quarter miles with it.

Surprised no one has mention GM.

Thats because a ring and pinion from GM is like $600

So heres a set of GM gears (packaged by motive..dont know what that means) for $180. Seems like a good deal for 4.10's. http://www.neweraperformanceparts.com/default.asp?S=503&A=E&PKV=gm0e410|0

That is a heck of a deal. You don't normally see GM gears at that price.

Any difference between Motive Performance (G875-373) & regular Motive (GM75-373) gears?
Also, why the preference? Is it price, performance, noise level, etc.?

No idea how true it is, but a long time ago I heard Motive makes the GM gears.
I just rebuilt my buddy's 10 bolt (as mentioned above)....all new bearings, seals and a new 342 Motive ring & pinion, and the gears are silent, like they should be.
I prefer Motive in GM cars because I have yet to have a set make any noise at all. They are quality gearsets, period. The noise of a Zoom or Richmond gearset will remain LONG after the couple dollars worth of savings is forgotten...

I did a little research on my own. Motive Performance are the street/strip gears, which are a little tougher than the regular Motives. It's generally accepted that the Motive Performance gears are quieter than the Motives.
Motive doesn't make the stock GM gears. They're made by American Axle Manufacturing (AAM), and are arguably the quietest gears overall for the 10-bolt. U.S. Gear gears are also reported to be pretty quiet. Both AAM & U.S. Gear sets are pretty hard to find.

Randy's Ring and Pinion sells Yukon gears, and one of Yukon's suppliers is AAM. High Performance Pontiac used these gears in a 10-bolt buildup article. The gears aren't terribly expensive either ($196.52 for 4.11s).
