im new here and i know this is mainly for ls1's and lt1's. but their is a 88 t/a for sale around here that is realy nice and the only thing wrong with it is that the trans droped. i think that year had the 700r4. and i found a 700r4 trans online for $180, but its from a 85. does anyone know if thats the right trans, and if it is will it work on the 88?
thanks:monkey:

85 will be iffy, cause I think 86 up were possibly computer controled partly if not fully by 88. I need to do more research into it. I would look for one closer to your year as those cars are TBI and havea computer on them.

the 700 r4 is not computer controlled like the 4l60e any year will work with the later years being the stronger just take a good look at it and inspect the fluid the only thing controlled by the computer on that car is the injection and ignition good luck with it

the lockup was computer controlled. shifting is not. the 85 will work in the 88.

Neg.. 87+ on the 'Bird side has the electronic spedomoter.. previous to that was cable driven.. so yes it will bolt up.. but he will have to do some work to convert it...

yeah, i forgot about the electric speedo. he can take his tailshaft housing and put it on the new trans. also have to switch the speedo gear off the output shaft.

Yeah, like I said.. it WOULD work.. but he will have more work to do.. but for 180 bucks.. who cares.. granted its not as strong as the 87+ trannys either.. but eh.. If he was closer.. I'd say he could buy my 88 Formula car (body is shot and int is gutted.. but the drivetrain (engine, tranny, rear) are still good.. and ran strong when I parked it.. but Il is a little far from NC.. only asking $500 for it..

yeah, input shaft design changes and some other things like 10 vane pump, instead of 7 vane. i've been through many 700R4 trnas in my old 86 TA i had http://www.fla-thirdgen.org/mrr23
