View Full Version : Torque Converter Gain?

I just recently purchased a '93 Formula A4 for next to nothing. The car is very close to stock with the exception of cold air intake, 1LE elbow, 160 stat, cat-back and a single 3" cut-out. I plan to make it a daily driver. With the exhaust open before the muffler, the car makes good power from a roll, but I decided to baseline it at the track tonight and found it to be pretty sluggish from the line. The torque has been moved up with the cut-out open, and doesn't begin to make power until around 3000-3200-rpm. It was easy to see that the 1600-rpm launches with the stock converter was not going to get the job done. Tommorrow I will be ordering a converter from Yank, with a stall speed of 3200-rpm, which is right where the cut-out likes to make it's power - or begin doing it.

This is my first A4 car - my other LT1 is an M6. How much of a gain should I expect with the stall upgrade - and nothing else? By the way the car sports the stock 3.23's.

I would say .3 -.5 in the quarter. Post up what your actual gains were.

You're going to love the converter.

I bet I will. It should be here by tuesday, and I am really looking forward to it. Also, I did not know that a torque converter eliminates the dead spot between shifts. I thought it was only an off the line gain. As you guys can see, I am transmission illiterate - been dealing with trans-axles all my life, ever since my 5-liter LX (oops!) :bomb:

You're going to want more stall later. ;)

I agree. I remember when I bought mine the old school guys I worked with kept telling me 3500 was to much stall. I wish I would've went a little bigger than that even.
