View Full Version : Owned a 2002 C5 Z06 . . . by bus lengths

I was driving down the street in my modified 996TT when I came upon a beautiful red C5 Z06 (2002). As I pulled up next to him, he immediately hammered the gas peddle. There were too many cars around, so I stayed behind him until traffic cleared. The Z06 found an open stretch without any cars and again mashed the gas peddle. I slipped into the lane next to him and went WOT (after he already had the jump). I immediately pulled by him and put many, many cars on him. He rolled up next to me at the next light and we agreed to go to a nearby quite, wide open street for a couple of runs.
We went twice . . . both times from a slow roll. I put bus lengths on the Z06 both runs.
Afterwards, we chatted for a while. The Z06 owner is a very cool guy. He just bought the car a couple of weeks ago and he appeared quite surprised that something driven on the street could beat him so badly. Nevertheless, he remained a gentlemen and we had a nice chat. His car is gorgeous!
I am not surprised by the outcome, as I have prevailed over several C5 Z06s in the past, when I was using a considerably less powerful set-up. Now I need to find C6 Z06!

Thanks for the welcome, but Im not new to this forum. I was a member back in 2002, but my membership was lost in the meltdown a few months ago. I just recently resigned up.
The C6 Z06 is a tremendous car and I have only respect for it. While it obviously is more of a challenge than a C5 Z06, I remain confident that I can handlily beat one. I do not have a 1/4 mile time slip for my particular car, but I am faster than the Z06s mid-11s.

I have never dynoed my car, but based on dyno numbers for a car with certain of the same mods, including the same turbos and fuel system, my best guestimate is about 950 hp at the crank (but that is nothing more than a guess).
AWD = All wheel drive (as opposed to front or rear wheel drive).
This forum will not allow me to post pics until I get to ten posts (I had many more than ten posts before my membership dissolved with the forum meltdown).

When someone who has a car with as many mods and money in it as yours, races someone else with the same power ( hennesey viper, calloway corvette, etc) THAT would be a race. If you had a STOCK 996tt and you beat a c5 z06 i would be suprised. Your car does sound like a nice ride.

he should race one of those vipers from heffner's. he specializes in twin turbo setups for them. he just recently moved his business to florida but when he was still in maryland my car was dynoed at his shop. when i was there a viper on the dyno put down 1100 to the wheels and they weren't even done with it  that would be a bad ass race and that has to be one bad ass car stock let alone with all the mods he has done.

I must be the only guy here that isn't very impressed. The 996 is a very nice car. And it's great that you doubled your hp with the mods, no doubt that you are a car guy.
Put twin-turbos on the that 2002 Z06, there's a fair race. Run the Porsche in question against a Hennessy Viper or the Lingenfelter twin-turbo Z06, that's a fair race. Stock for Stock, the twin turbo 996 is nearly matched to the C5 Z06.
If a guy's car with 950hp beats a car with 405hp, it's not that impressive, it's expected.....and then to brag about it. The WS6 will put buslenths on a V6 Mustang...so should I go to the Mustang sites and brag? What's the point?

Isn't it ironic that, whenever someone posts a kill, someone else invariably points out that some other car is faster and "there is always someone out there faster than you." I am well aware of the 1200rwhp TT Vipers, as well as the dual 300 shot Novas, etc. Ive seen several 8-9 second cars racing on the street. I never stated, or even implied, that my car is the fastest car on the road. To the contrary, I merely posted a story of one particular race and, when people subsequently asked about my mods, I responded.
Nevertheless, thanks for the sage advice.

I must be the only guy here that isn't very impressed. . . . If a guy's car with 950hp beats a car with 405hp, it's not that impressive, it's expected.....and then to brag about it. . . . What's the point?
First, I never suggested that the outcome of the race was "impressive." To the contrary, I expressly stated that it was "expected."
Second, I never "bragged" about the outcome, but rather, merely shared a story of an unexpected street encounter.
"Whats the point" you ask? I do not get many opportunities to run my car, as very few cars will run me, and even fewer are worth running. I wish I would encounter more capable cars on the road, but it rarely happens. Thus, I run what is brung at me. When a reasonably fast car challenges me (recall that I did not challenge him) and we run, a street encounter has occurred. Nothing more, nothing less. It may not be the end all, be all, greatest street encounter ever, but is was a street encounter all the same. I shared the encounter here because this is an LS1 forum and I have been a member here since 2002 (notwithstanding my new membership status due to my prior membership being lost). Had it been a Lambo or Ferrari, I would not have posted the story here, just as I did not post this story on supraforums.com. As previously stated, I didn't "brag" about the outcome, nor suggest that it was "impressive." Rather, in a respectful tone, I merely shared a street encounter with a car that challeneged me and the "expected" outcome.
There has never been a requirement here for posting kill stories that the two cars be evenly matched and, if you read through the kill stories, many involve cars of substantially different caliber. Thus, your suggestion that my story is not worthy of sharing is without precedent or merit. Had I beat my chest about the outcome and/or denigrated the other car, you might have grounds to criticize me. However, given that I merely shared an isolated street encounter in a respectful tone, noting that the outcome was "expected," your commentary is unwarranted.

Hey 996, don't worry about it man. Some people just get a little overly sensitive when people bring up any suggestion that any LSx powered vehicle could possibly be beat. Personally, I don't care. Hell, I just like to see people make things go fast. More power to you.
By the way, good luck in finding someone on the street that could be considered a worthy opponent. I sure as hell wouldn't know anyone that could run you in my area. Even if I did, and even if we were in the same area, your chances of running across anyone putting out comparable power to you are slim and none. So, with that being said, you'll probably go undefeated in that pimp chariot until you bring it to a track and find others that are able to invest as much. It's good to be king.
If you get a chance, I think there's more than two of us here that would love to see some video of you running that thing. :usa:

I'd rather not discuss the amount of my investment, as it is a personal matter that I would prefer to remain out of the public domain.

Its not really what you said, its where you said it. Its against the grain. Your at a website dedicatated to gm vehicles, or vehicles with a gm powerplant and you basicly spit on the floor. That wouldnt fly in my house. Now i am by no means an automotive snob. I appreciate all makes and models, especially those that the owner took the time to make unique. That is by all means a bad ass car, and id be lying if i said that the thought of handing someone their ass while being behind the wheel of that monstrosity doesnt bring a shit eating grin to my face. Its just that overall it lacked dignity to make a post for that kill. I respectfully disagree with the sentiment shared by some that it was disrespectful for me to share my encounter on this forum, and that certainly was not my intent or desire. Nevertheless, to the extent that my post was perceived as disrespectful by some members here, I apologize.

That is one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen! Congrats on owning that car 996 and don't worry about the haters here. With AWD, it must launch like a rocket! Theres a guy around here with a Cobra putting 950hp to the ground, but he just got owned by a 02 SS with a 200 shot and some suspension work. lol, the poor guy can't launch it! Anyways, you gotta get a vid for us cause I wanna see your Porsche in action.

Both JB (aka Joel) and Pakisho (aka Oz) have extensive mods above and beyond their superchargers, and they both are well above 600 rwhp.
JB describes his car as follows:
98 Supercharged Coupe
Forged Pistions and rods
CNC Heads and Comp Cam
Borla Stingers
Vortech T-Trim with Custom Aftercooler setup
Two Heat exchangers cool water for aftercooler
Methonal injection
Brembo Big brakes all the way around
T-1 Sway Bars, C5R Springs, QA1 Adjustable Shocks
Rodney Built Tranny, Cryoed Diff gears W/Hardened shaft and DTE Diff/Tranny strut brace
Mcloed Duel Disk Clutch W/Kevlar lining
etc......
He has photos at: www.jbsblownc5.net
Pakisho has the following mods that I am aware of (and more that I am not aware of): Forged 347, D1 Procharger, 13 psi, single front mount intercooler, Tial BOV, Stainless works headers, CCW wheels
They both should be good races.

Just a question for you. You're planning on running these two 'serious' powered/blown Corvette's... but how, exactly? Are you running heads up (from a dig)? From a roll? 1/4 mile? 1/8 mile? Top speed on the highway? What?
I've raced a naturally aspirated 'street' LS1 (with my 454) at the track, who tore me a new freaking @sshole... and my best time is 10.11 in the quarter. I'm just curious as to how you're planning on running each other.
Not putting down you're ride, as I'm glad you took out that ZO6 (nice kill, and car by the way  )... but ZO6's aren't that fast, stock (excluding the new LS7), so the kill isn't really "that" impressive for you're car. The corvette that took me out ran a low nine second pass, and 'looked' completely stock (save for a slight buldge in the hood, and bigger meats out back), and I'd be the first to admit that I was freaking raped, and raped bad.
Edit: I had to call my cousin to confirm that run, and I was definitely a little off in my paraphrasing. That corvette did in fact run a nine second pass, but not low nine's. From memory, he believes it was 9.6x's. Either way, I was toast. ;)

No details have been discussed. I suspect we will go from a roll. Otherwise, I don't know.
My car, and the S/C'd Vettes that I will be running, although plenty powerful, are in a completely different league than the 9 second LS1 you described. I have no misconceptions about where I fit in the food chain.

I've always loved 911 turbos. They are just beautiful. I had to travel to Irvine, CA for business back in May and in my off-time I went to an exotic car dealership in Newport Beach. They had a silver 911 Turbo S convertible, in addition to a bunch of Ferrari's, Bentley's, etc. Although not the most expensive, the Porsche was easily my favorite.

A little poking around on Porsche forums and it seems the X50 turbos can support up to 600bhp. You're claim of 950 seems ricerific. I think a C6 Z06 would hand you your ass. Even if you had other mods, the porsche is too heavy to hang.

The x50 can support +/- 600 hp on STOCK K24 TURBOS. I have considerably larger turbos, along with a completely different fuel system. My car ceased being an x50 a long time ago.
Find a C6 Z06 in Los Angeles to run me and we can put money on the race. Ill even give you 2 to 1 odds. Your $500 against my $1000. Deal? You sound confident that a C6 Z06 will "hand me my ass", so it should be easy money.

A pic of those larger turbos would suffice. For someone with no shortage of pics of his car and pride in the upgrades, you don't have much proof of the latter.
If I went to a porsche board, showed pics of my car and said "It's 1300bhp with my blah blah blah upgrades and I spanked a porshe by bus lengths" I'd expect to be called on it.
At least have a dyno sheet scanned in before saying "950". Even a SupraJet dyno would be better than talking out your ass.

John,
1. I have no need, nor any desire, to “prove” anything to you. I will lose no sleep if you disbelieve me.
2. The turbos on my car can only be seen from below, and I do not have any photographs of my car on a lift. The following is a photo of the same turbo on a different car:
http://www.evoms.com/DSC02855.jpg
It has a GT30R compressor and a K24 turbine.
3. I clearly stated that the 950 hp figure is “guesstimate.” I have not dynoed my car. A car with the same turbos and fuel system, but 6 pounds less boost, a much more restrictive exhaust, and many fewer mods than my car, produced 732 hp at the wheels.
http://www.evoms.com/gt800_vs_stock_hp_and_tq.jpg
With 6 additional pounds of boost, a far superior exhaust (no cats and straight through mufflers, as opposed to cats and chamber mufflers), far superior intake plenum, methanol injection, superior intercooler end tanks, etc., my car clearly makes more power . . . likely 100+ more hp (just the additional boost gets me most of the way there).
4. No need to "shut your pie hole" -- your unsupported arguments and unnecessary hostility speaks volumes.

Lol!
1. Yes, my lowly Porsche is nothing more than a “fucking import.”
2. Are you suggesting that a car with twice the displacement of my car AND twin turbos might be faster than my car? What a revelation!!! I never stated that my car is faster than a TT Vette, and my “bubble” would not be burst if I lost to one. I have no misconceptions about where my car stands in the food chain. There are plenty of faster cars, TT Vettes included.
3. Its ironic that, whenever someone posts a kill story, others invariably point out that if the other car had additional mods, the outcome might have been different. “If the Vette was a TT, . . . . “ If my Aunt had a cock, she would be my Uncle. If, if, if . . . Run what you brung. He challenged me and I responded.
4. Its equally ironic that, whenever I post a kill story, someone invariably points out that I could have a faster car for much less money (as though I had no idea, and I selected a Porsche as a cost effective means of making power). I am fully aware that I spent more than I needed to for the power that I have. If my goal was the best bang for the buck, I would not have selected either a Porsche or a Corvette. An 03 Cobra is a far better platform for cost efficient power -- I could build a 9 second 03 Cobra for less than a stock C6 Z06. An older notchback is an even more cost efficient means of making power -- I could create a 9 second notchback for less than the cost of a stock 03 Cobra. I was well aware of these options when I selected a Porsche, but I placed greater emphasis on factors other than cost efficient power. I’ll bet I could build a substantially faster car than yours for less than you spent. You too obviously considered other factors when choosing your car. The same holds true for almost all car owners. Enzo owners do not spend a million dollars because they think it’s a cost efficient way of getting 600 hp. There is MUCH more to cars than simply best bang for the buck.

Find me a TT C5 to race and Ill do it (fully expecting to lose). I have no problem racing faster cars, and I will suffer no shame if a car with twice my displacement, twin turbos AND less weight is faster than me (no surprise there). I raced the C5 Z06 because HE CHALLENGED ME. I have plans to race a S/C C5 and a S/C C5 Z06 in the near future.

I didn't make any unsupported arguments, I said you were making some hefty claims without much proof. I implied it would be more believable if you have some pics of your car's mods, not just the car itself (a badass car even stock, I'll give you that). Then you post pictures of someone else's turbos. That was kind of weak.
You have a nice car, but what kind of reaction were you expecting when you come to ls1.com to post a story about a Corvette kill as your first and only thread, claiming a HUGE list of mods, have no shortage of pics of your car, but not one with such mods?
If you want credibility around here post of some track times or dyno sheets. This is a pretty honest place, nobody disrepects badass cars. But we do call bullshit on people pretty often!
BTW, if you have half those mods I don't want to piss you off. Not because I think you'll drive out here and humiliate me, but because I make it out to CA a few times a year, and if I'm ever in LA I want a ride :yup:
Eitherway, stick around ls1.com, its always fun to have people with different cars here. Talking shit is why the internet was invented!

Who gives a shit about what most people on this site would prefer to own? People on here need to quit being such tools. Seriously, so the guy bought a Porsche cuz he didn't want to blend in, or cuz he wanted something with better fit and finish, or maybe, he just liked the way it looks. Who gives a crap.
Shouldn't we as LS whatever owners be happy not everyone in the world has one? Shouldn't we be happy there are cars out there with different badging for us to race? Think about it.
Besides, that Porsche looks pretty sweet. Hell, I'd be happy to own it. I don't have that kind of money though. Even if I did, I'm not sure that would be the car I'd own. But who knows.
Everyone in here that's doing the "LS1s are better than anything" typical shit should get off their soapbox and look around. Yes, the LS1 is a great engine. Yes, I love owning one. But god damn! There are other cars out there that are bad ass too.

Wow...
First of all, 996TTx50, nice car, nice kill. Some people are obviously pretty envious.
Second of all, kudos to you for taking the time and putting up with the insults to substantiate your claims. Again, some people obviously do not take the time to read through all the information here (as evidenced by the posters who asked for pics after the fact)
Seems like you were in the right to strike back after the Z06 owner gave the first jab. And it also seems like you are well aware that there are 1,000 ways to make a 1,000 Horsepower.. I'd say less than 2% of 1,000 hp cars could actually carve a corner with something besides the door handle. I've always thought it was really cool to mix all forms of performance, and not just straight line acceleration.
Hope you can put up with the critics, for I too would love to vids of your car.

John, it would take half of that horsepower rating to do exactly that. My 454 (cleverly disguised as an LG4 to those who are not in the know), is no where near 600 horsepower, yet it raped, and I mean raped, a Diablo last summer out on the street.
