U should take him w/out much problem unless u miss a shift. Btw, 99 and 01 cobras only have a 5 speed transmission.

Can't be unless its been swapped, 01 Cobras never came with 6 speeds.

if he had gears he may make it close, but otherwise you should have it. his car is geared horribly, will go 120+ in third, it might as well be an automatic!

everyone knows even ford the taller the gears the faster your car will be.
but you should take him just dont mess up shifting.

No I meant why is it horrible that 3rd gear gets you at 120+
I think my car does that in either 4 or 5th gear.

for gas mileage since 5th is their highway gear and we have a 6th for highway they need a tall 5th and other gears leading up to it.

because of tq multiplication through the gears. if geared properly, a stockish cobra shouldnt even hit 115 in 4th. It hurts it even from a roll. the 3.27's in that car is equivalent of running something like 2.70's on a stockish LS1.
for the Cobra to even have COMPARABLE gearing (in ratio to the powerband) to a 3.42 rear LS1, it would need 4.10's.

It's common knowledge that the '96-'99 and '01 Cobras need at least 4.10 gears to really wake up.

a lot of the 05+ gt guys like 4.56 for the track the 3 or more valve motors like to be up high in the powerband due to the nature of a dohc motor.
And why do you want a cobra?

The Mustang GT is a SOHC engine. The Cobra and Ford GT have DOHC engines.

Yeah the 05+ GT's are SOHC but have 3 valves per cylinder.

You should take him but don't screw up or you may get surprised, they aren't slow! Somebody else mentioned gears for 01 cobra, I had one and would say 4:30's that is what I'm currently running in the Mach which is my DD!

Yea but I dont want to kill my gas mileage, unless there wouldnt be a big difference between 4.10 and 4.30.

By no means are the 01 Cobra's slow - no matter what anyone tries to tell you, though they are not on par with an LS1 M6 stock for stock. They will generally run in the 13.7 range @ around 103-104. Considering your mods and his, I'd bet my money that you'd pull 'em!

got a 98 TA with air lid slip loudmouth and 323s.. A4.. ran a guy who has a 99 cobra.. not sure on mods.. let him have the hit both times.. first one was form 50. has him by half a car at around 95 and was still pulling.. ever so slowly though.. then we went from 35(lag).. again he had hit and i got him by about 1-1 1/2 by 100.. was still pulling...
evenly matched drivers.. ls1 by about 1-2 cars.. IMO drivers race......

It will be close, a drivers race. I use to have a 01 Cobra vert (heavy) with a chip, off-road x pipe, CAI, pulley's... it put down 310rwhp and 310rwtq... with 3.73's. I ran 13.2's @ 106-107mph with horrible 60's on the stock tires during the summer/fall. Good luck

I run 4:30 in the mach, I drive about 60 miles round trip, back road and some city driving, and I always avg. around 20 mpg on every tank. The car has a couple bolt ons the last dyno was 312/329, and 85000 miles on it now. Don't fear the gear in the 4 valve!

Dude, you might wanna get an LS1 before you try that 01 out. Both nice cars, but you have way more potential N/A with the LS1.
I drove a 97 SS before I test drove my full bolt-on, 4.10 geared LS1 and there was a HUGE difference. The SS was kind of ragged out, and it ALMOST turned me off from F-bods all together. (I had just sold a full bolt-on, geared 01 cobra at the time)
But I test drove this Z28 and I was HOOKED! This thing just LAUNCHED out of the hole. It had some trac suspension on it too. Since then I have hooked it up (see sig), and she is wicked fast now.
Installing gears in an 01 cobra is gonna run you about 800 bones, that IRS is a biatch. Supercharger is the only way to go if you wanna handle LS1's, and theres another 7K!!! Not to mention the bolt-ons and all that good jive.
Look to spend big buddha cheese for a cobra!

To me dumping 2 grand for a good rear is such a waste, they need to come from factory to handle power not just be a fast stock car. but thats just IMHO.
To run mid 12s or faster is good enough for me, not too hard to do with a cobra.

Well i got a 99 cobra with h pipe, flows and CAI..And i ran a 14.1 @ 99 with my traction conrol on.. I got there just in time to run 3 times down the strip..I had about half a tank of gas, my spare, jack and right headlight were still in..a 99-01 should run a 13.7-13.8 stock...BTW i get 19-20 mpg's with my stock gears, if i keep the car ill be getting 4.10s, but hopefully i can trade to get a WS6, GTO, term, or vette as soon as i sell my atv.

If mid 12's is good enough then you should have no problems. It took my '93 bolt-ons, weight reduction, built 700R4, Yank "SS" 3200 stall and Nitto 555r's to cut 12.6@107.
And by the way, don't go for that Cobra. I'll admit I do approve of the 4-valve - it's a solid performer, but it's only for the Ford die hards. The cost of modding them is sky high, and they don't respond to bolt-ons as well. Go with an LS1 instead.

wow... mid 12s is all your looking for??.... that could be accomplished with right at grand as long as you arent forking money out to a mechanic for every bit of work.......
stall 350
tires 250
gears 100
headers 350
that should get you well into the 12s... the cobra and ls1 are pretty evenly matched.. i would give the ls1 about 2 cars if evenly matched drivers.. and the ls1 responds to mods better.. not to mention what you have left after 100+.....
after i raced that 99 cobra.. i do have more respect for them.... stock for stock that is.. GTs no respect for (STOCK)... they are very respectable but ls1 F..T...W.......... no disrespect meant to anyone.. just an opinion..

Uhhh, ever heard of axle hop? Well, when you launch those IRS cobra's, you will find out soon enough why they go out and get solid axles. It will shake your guts out at times.

if mid 12's is all your going for, i wouldnt even go with the LS1 either. Just stick the LT1 you have, since you have it already.
and if your planning on staying NA I wouldnt get the cobra either.

I put an FR500 crossbrace on mine with solid aluminum bushings, and I took that stupid weight off the housing. It helped greatly, but it still shook sometimes.
I would have hated to put a solid axle in there, it handled great with the IRS.

You have to practically drop the IRS to swap them out don't you?
