The auburn units use a cone style setup,,,they are not rebuildable persay,,,although auburn themselves have come up with a way to refurbish an old worn unit, by remachining the case and installing new cones, more shims and/or welding the case etc....but really doesn't cure the problem. It's more of a bandaid. Once the case starts wearing it's on it's way to being a door stop in my experience. Quite simply it uses the case to preload the cones,,,kind of a self destruct wearing device if you will.
This may have changed since then,,,I haven't used them in years for this reason and went to using Eaton.
Eaton has been the manufacture for the GM muscle cars since the 60's,,,and is a true clutch style unit,,,completely rebuildable and can be tailored to your liking as far as type of clutches used, types of springs used, shims etc.....to make it as tight as you prefer. So long as you don't destroy the case,(ie: bust it),,,it can be rebuilt endless times and would last the life of the car. Parts are cheap and easy to obtain,,,,the parts can even still be had from GM if you prefer.
It's probably the most versatile, quiet and trouble free posi that has been proven for many years so long as it's treated right. Buy that I mean,,,,holding the foot brake to do burnouts,,,thats a no no and kills more posi unit's than I can count...get yourself a linelock,,,,it's much easier on the rearend,,,the axle bearings and the rear brakes. Also be carefull not to install a stupid space saver spare on the rear,,,,this will also kill a clutch/cone style posi within a couple miles,,,,as the tires are no longer the same height on each side. Hope that helps.

If your going to mess with the 10 bolt, DONT!!!! Rule #1 when it comes to the 10 bolt UPGRADE don't rebuild. Get you a nice 9" back there.
If you insist on rebuilding, Don't buy auburn they suck. Get an Eaton posi they are much, much better.
