100,000 tune up!

Hey all!

I just bought a 2000 Formula this week with a 6-spd. It has 103,000 miles on her. I noticed in the am, since it is cold now, it seems to knock for few minutes. Is this normal? What type of stuff should I go ahead and replace/service?

Make sure it didn't have the throttle body bypass mod done to it. Fine in the summer but not Ohio winters.

Congrats on the purchase.
Since you dont know the conditon of the fluids and filters i would start there.
Piston slap is normal for our cars until the warm up.
I would replace The fuel filter,
Oil and oil filter
Rear end fluid
Tranny fluid and filter
Air filter
Plugs and wires
Have the coolant flushed and refilled with dexcool.
Get the car on a lift and inspect for leaks or any bad mounts or bushings.
Atleast then you will know where you stand with all your fluids and the overall shape of your car.

I'll give you the same advice I give everyone buying a used higher mileage car. If it's a filter, fluid, hose, or belt replace it. That's the only real way to know where you stand at on the maintenance of your car. They're all cheap and easy to do. No reason not to change them out.

He won't have a tranny filter due to it being a M6. Right?

Welcome neighbor. That knock you mention may very well be piston slap. It's a common LS1 problem and it rears it's ugly head when the engine is cold just as you described. After warm up it goes away usually. It's nothing real serious to worry about unless it starts causing you oil consumption problems or something along those lines.

The throttle body bypass isn't a big deal here in Ohio,,,I have been driving one of my F bodies for 10 years in the cold Ohio weather without any issues. It's my old body that complains though,,,,lol. Goodluck with the new car. Cheers.

Good idea, but I wouldnt do Dexcool. I would switch to green or yellow. dexcool glogs up stuff sometimes, and makes nasty coolant bottles. idk i just dont like the stuff

I've heard that before but I personally have never had a problem with Dexcool. I use it in 3 different cars without issues,,,,been in my 97 for 10 years now without any problems. It's also in my 02 SS and my wifes Jeep.
I think where people run into problems is neglecting to do regular maintainance. Although this is supposed to be 5 year antifreeze I still service mine every year and at the very least every 2 years.

I've seen some cars come into my shop that are 10 years old and have never had it changed at all :spank2: I beleive thats where the problems start.
