View Full Version : Rear End Preventative Maintenance

Alright so after changing my fuel filter for sh!*s and giggles I noticed that my rear end is getting gunky and I have to do something about that. Im getting ready to change the fluid and gasket so does anyone have any tips or recommended fluids for me??? Any additives? Otherwise Im going to put it back to stock and just clean it very well...

A lot of people use royal purple gear oil, including me. You dont need an additive if you go with there brand but if you use cheaper brands you have to get GMs additive. Youll probally have to go to the dealer to get it.

Im already running royal purple in the engine.. Thats all I run.

If your axle asm. is the stock one, you'll need to determine if it's a zexel torsion unit or an Auburn unit. The zexel doesn't need any friction modifier additive just a good syn. lube, but the Auburn will. Unless the royal purple rear axle lube has the additive processed in it then you will need to put in the additive. See if it states anything related to this subject on the container of Royal purple lube.

OK, that's your gear ratio. But you won't be able to tell what carrier you have (zexel or auburn) until you remove your cover because I've seen both carrier types with your gear ratio that you have.

What do you look for after you have the cover off to determine if you have a zexel or auburn?

The zexel unit utilizes a paddle system to create a posi action and the auburn uses cone style assembly to do the same thing.
