4.10's or ditch the 10 bolt and get a 12 bolt or 9"

If it's gonna stay N/A and never be stupidly fast, 4.10s. If you plan on cam and spray or anything like that, 3.90s

save your money on a gear swap (The 10 bolt is a pyle of shit) and get a new 9" with at least 4.10 gears!!!! I would recomend the 4.30's

Define stupid fast What is ~about~ the top speed with 4.10s

As fast as I care to go on the freeway. You'll still hit your speed limiter if you insist on going that fast.

Thanks for the compliment Jay

Top speed with stock tires and 4.10s is around 126, in 4th that is. If you're racing you don't want to get into 5th. No matter what gear you get, overall top speed including 5th and/or 6th will still be damn fast. And no offence to anyone in this thread, but you can't take advice from someone that just throws out a gear ratio as "the best" without no concern for the goals and uses of the car in question. So, let us know your intentions for the car as far as mods etc and it will help. If you only plan on going bolt-ons 4.30s might be a decent option, otherwise it's too low of a gear. Cam only, and heads/cam? 4.10s. Anything faster than that and you want 3.90s. Are there people with all out heads/cam/sprayed/blown cars running 4.30s? Sure, and they will obviously tell you it's the best choice, because that's what they have and they like it. There is more to it than lower gears are better though. There's a reason Superfast cars like the powerglide with only 2 gears. Turbo cars like higher gears too, lower isn't always better

Didn't say he was going to the track. From what I could tell he was more of a steet guy. as for 3.90's I had them in my 10 bolt, I had plenty of gear left in 4th in the 1/4 mile. I always wished I went to the 4.10's. Might be a different story once I got my cam put in.

4.30's are a great gear for a mildly modified car running on the street with a 6 speed. With my 275 35 18 wheels at 75 mph my rpm is 2150 rpm at 75 mph in 6th gear. Most of the guys I have talked to that run mostly on the street, wished they went to 4.30's instead of the 4.10's with a 6 speed. My suggestion was 4.10's my recomendation was 4.30's from what I went with and what a whole bunch of others suggested when I went to change my rear end.

I just put my 9" in with the 4.30's and absolutely love the gears. Since mine is a street/strip car, When the cam goes in, I will have to do some calculating on different size tires. When I take it to the track I will run a taller tire to get me in the sweet spot.

Okay everyone remain calm....lol
No I generally do not run my car on the track (actually I haven't yet) I intend it to be more or less a daily driver that will shut down anything in town 126 in 4th sounds good to me. I am sightly concerned with highway rpm/gas milage so yah...

Taller tires at the track is the perfect answer.

Cammed/100shot will run out of 4th in the 1/4 mile if the run pretty good and are on stock height tires. Just a cammed car should be fine, even on stock height tires and 4.30s. I'm not saying that higher gears are always better, if you go cam only or even heads/cam, your car should run great with 4.30s.

SycoJoe, if you are concerned with highway rpm/gas mileage don't worry regardless of what gears you get, with a 6-speed that shouldn't really become an issue unless you mod drastically. I'd still say 3.90s, and if you want to own the streets spray it. Once you make more power, lower gears become much less important.
