No front license plate? I have, and I tried the ol' "there's no place to put one" excuse, and of course the officer went on to tell me about taking off that 'Bird cover and puttin on a plate!! I dont think so :nono: ! I don't drive it much (2000mi in 2.5 yrs), I think I'll take my chances. Just wonderin' how many of you run with plates and how many runnin the way they're supposed to be!

When I lived in Virginia I was stopped twice. Each time resulted in a ticket for no front plate. Now I live in South Carolina....no front plate required. :)

If you only drive it 1000 miles a year throw it in the front window like some people throw the rear one in the back window.

I would only stop a guy with no front plate for probable cause only if I suspected something more! I would never write somebody for no front plate only.. That is bullshit! Especially a sports car, he he he!!!!! I'm a cop.. And even I wouldn't put a front plate on in place of my precious bird cover. We as cops have to draw the line somewhere! :shower:

I live in VA and the troopers are fanatical about BS stuff like tint and no front plate violations. I've been stopped for both and got a warning on the tint and a ticket for the plate. Each time I was pulled over only for those issues (each time I was going the speed limit, in traffic, and on either a freeway on or off ramp). I was even cool with the troopers, hoping they'd let me slide. I was lucky with the tint issue since I got off with a warning. Apparently, I wasn't the only one with the plate issue since there were about 5 trooper cars pulling multiple cars over for minor violations. BTW, I received the plate ticket taking the I95 South exit off of 495 (the Mixing Bowl). What a stupid ass place to be pulling people over for BS violations. They had traffic backed up for at least two miles.

I recently picked up a clear front cover sold by Afterthoughts Auto. They look pretty nice and still show the plate pretty clearly.

A cop whipped a u-turn across 4 lanes of rush hour traffic to give me a fix-it-ticket for no plate when I had an IROC. I had installed the red bowtie insert from the 91-92 Z28....looked nice. I put the factory correct "Camaro" insert back on, installed the plate, went to the police station, had the cop look at it and sign off on the ticket. Went back home and reinstalled the red bowtie insert....never nailed again. :yup:

Had an 89 Vette for 2 years and was never nailed while running the "Corvette" plate insert.

When I find a black plate insert for my WS6....bye-bye plate! :usa:

HONBOY1 would you bust two guys drag racing if they raced on a safe road, waited and made sure no cars were coming, raced til we hit about ten over the speed limit then let off, and you were off duty? well it happened to me and I got taken to jail, liscense was suspended and slapped with some hellacious fines and community service. I ended up having to sell that camaro to pay for all the fines!!!

I'm here in vegas and I actually got pulled over for speeding (58 in a 35) but I still had my paper tag on it so I'm not sure if he would have hassled me had I had hard tags. Probably not considering he knocked it down to a 45 in a 35 and I was able to get it taken off. Thank you officer. :)

Off duty?? I would sit and watch!!! As far as on duty... If the public was watching, I would have to at least stop you to make it look like I'm doing my job. If you were sober and had a valid license, I would surely give you a break. Ten over the speed limit aint shit though. I don't give speeding tickets unless they're going over 15 mph over the posted limit. I focus on shitheads with no license and no insurance, not gearheads!

I got away with no FP the first time when I first got my car. I asked the cop if he could tell me how to take off the front bird plate I'd put it on. He got down, looked and said, well, since you did just get your car, I'm gonna let you off. Since I can't figure out how to take of that damn front plate off myself gives me more of a reason not to write you a ticket! The second time I just couldn't get away with it. So I slapped the plate on, went to the station, paid my $10 and went home and changed it back

So does a plate in the front window constitute a "displayed" plate? I would have to think that it does.

My THREE stories,

1. Drove a 2 hour trip in my '91 Bird to a small ocean town, as soon as I turned on the main drag, a cop in a Chevy Blazer flipped a bitch and pulled me over. Result: Warning + Ticket for No Insurance

2. Exactly 2 weeks after story #1 happened, I was driving down the waterfront strip here in Tacoma, and a bike cop U-turned and pulled me over.
Result: Fix it ticket AND another No Insurance ticket.

3. Fast Forward 3 years, this is just about 2 months ago, a bike cop (see a pattern here?) watched me pass by in front of him where he was waiting at a light. I wasn't worried one bit since I was all legal, and wasn't speeding. Next thing I know, he's there in my mirror lights-a-flashin. I pulled over and tried to explain to him there is nowhere to mount on (playing dumb) and that the car only had one plate on it when I bought it (the truth). Result: Warning.

I just can't bring myself to ruin the natural beauty of these cars by putting that godawful license plate right there on the front.

I saw that show Adam Carolla has (had?) where he is renovating a house, anyways, he was bitching about the same shit. Cops wasting time giving him a ticket for no front plate on his 350Z. Was pretty damn funny. TV crew followed him around to his garages, while he looked for the plate which he never found.

I just went to court and the public defender asked did I fix it I said yep and the ticket was dropped in ILLINOIS. It happens to me about once a year. I think warnings and tickets are off your record every six months. haven't had front plates for 19 years.

Yeah Virginia is the worst state when it comes to tickets.

I was on I-81 South heading back to school, VA Tech, I was in the number 2 spot out of 8 in a convoy of Tech students. Going about 5 to 10 over the limit, state trooper sitting in the median pulls me over. Walked around the entire car, told me I had a real nice car, warned me about my plates, and then gives me a ticket for the tint(I have 20% legal limit in VA is 50% on the sides). Fine was $30 but a $56 processing fee.

I got a $30 ticket for no front plate in downtown Denver. Took my son to lunch, came back, and it was under the wiper blade. So I figured as unique as my car is, it would continue to draw attention, and put the plate on the front. Of course, I went ahead and put the smoke colored covers on both plates as well. One week later, I got pulled over. What for? Seems they had just passed a new law in Colorado making the dark tinted plate covers illegal as well! Guess their photo radars couldn't read the numbers on plates with them in place. He gave me a warning only, but told me the ticket would be $167 next time, so I should change them out... which I did to the clear ones.

It's all about the money folks....

I, too, can add to those who have gotten a ticket for no front plate. I took my TA to the dealership to see if they could tell me how to remove the front bird and I asked if they knew whether or not I needed a mount for a plate...not one person knew how to answer my questions.

No assistance from the Whittier, CA Pontiac Dealer... very sad.

In an effort to get this ticket removed, I found out that the front bird logo will come out, from the top, by pushing it down and removing the teeth from their inserts...the bottom didn't come off that easy. The bottom of the bird logo busted...like the holes of a piece of paper that have been ripped from a 3 ring binder. :(

Has anyone seen something like this: An old Knight Rider episode had the rear plate revolve to an alternate license plate. I was hoping there was something for the front plate, so you/we could keep the bird logo, flip a switch, and show the plate when needed.

Oh well....

Up here the police in my town, police always give me dirty looks. I think that is only half the reason. The other half is I look younger than I am. So when I park it at a parts store, ect. I put my front plate proped up on the dash. The police in Anchorage don't even bother to look. If I have to ever put it on I am going to order one of the clear covers and paint it lightly so you can still kind of see the plate behind it.

We need more cops that own fbody's! The best we have around here is a Sheriff with a Camaro Z28. All the cops here hate the fbody owners. There was a point in time where it was ridiculous. Actually I have two questions for you.
1. If a cop sat out front of your house in a lawn chair reading a newspaper is there anything I can do about that?
2. If a cop is going around bragging to my co-workers about how he sat out front of my house all the time(which is a lie, it only happened once) and told them I was so scared to come outside and drive and so forth, is that allowed?
Yes these both happened to me because the cops around here are very childish.

I had my car for less than 3 weeks before a cop told me I'd have to put a plate there. He was monitoring some construction at a rather busy intersection and I happened to stop in traffic right where he was standing. Older fella, real nice tho. He walked around the front of the car, looking down, and I thought "aw, crap."

He came up to the window and said "it's not often anymore that you see works of art on the road." I laughed & agreed with him. He said "you know you'll have to put a front plate on there, dont' ya?" I said "yeah, but the temp tags are still on it ... honestly I was planning on leaving it off until an officer stopped me for it." He said "I don't blame you, but just so you know, that'd be about a $90 fine, depending on how long you've had plates."

So as soon as I got the plates, I had to swallow some pride and put it on there.

I did get a nice dark smoke-colored cover for it, though. ;)

I was pulled over once at a check point the cops had set up (in Ohio) but the guy just used the missing front plate as a reason to pull me over and make sure I wasn't drinking or whatever, then as he was turning to walk away he said if this was his car he wouldn't put one on either. I thought that was funny and kinda refreshing to hear from a cop.

Now I live in KY and it's not required here. About the only advantage to KY over OH as far as I can tell.

Someone called 911 on my son and 3 of his buddies, all in seperate cars, as they were doing stupid stuff on rural roads. They pulled in a development to turn around when the cops blocked it off. If the cops witnessed it, they would have gotten wreckless op and speeding tickets. The front plate is on the T/A, but one of the other cars had it in the front window. Not good enough. That cost $135.00. :cuss:

In Texas the State Troopers will pull you over in a heart beat. I have gotten busted twice, but just given warnings. Thank God. I don't want to have a front plate on. In no paticular order.
1. Speeding
2. Going too slow
3. Tints
4. No front plate
5. Exhaust too loud
6. Not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign
7. Not signaling when making a turn
8. At a random check point I was pulled over because of the NOS tank in the back
9. The smoke coming from my rear end(burnout in the middle of a street)

Well I had a Typhoon with no front plate got pulled over twice and got 1 ticket. PLayed dumb and told them i bought it this way which was the truth didn't matter second time. Went to the license plate place got new plates took my receipt to the ticket place (not the station) and paid my $10. Had an 04 IMpala SS for 9 months which had a insert and never got pulled over. I kept the front plate next to the seat I used electrical tape and taped all the edges so if i got pulled over I could toss it onto the dash. Never got pulled over. I have an 05 Durango that originated from New Mexico that had no front plate and the dealer didn't put a plate on it so neither did i and have yet to be pulled over. If i do I can tell the cop I lost it when my house burned down plus it came this way. Which would be the truth. My 97 LT1 when i get the money for the bigblock hood and painting the front and rear bumpers I am going to have the front plate removed and the holes filled.

I was pulled over many...many times in a 86' Camaro, because it looked so ghetto.

Why did it look so ghetto?

Because GM in their infinite purse string tightening wisdom thought it would be a great idea to use only an electrolytic coat under the paint and skip the primer...pure genius.
Paint was peeling off of it everywhere, then where it had, it was beginning to rust.
That was in NY, on Long Island, where there's an overpaid cop every twenty feet whose only problem for the day is how many cars he's going to pull over.

Now I'm in Florida and I gotta say, cops are much cooler down here...least so far.

May sound strange, but they look at you first, ya know?

Then they make their determination...I like that.

You keep your car looking nice, don't drive like your drunk, and definitely don't drive while you are,
you should be alright.

I can't prove it but I swear, I don't know how I know, but I get the sense they want to see me get on it,
and not so they can pull me over but because they wanna see what I got. I could be wrong, maybe it's just wishful thinking, but one of these days I'll get to talk to one, hopefully only because were both getting coffee in a 7-11 or something, then I'll know. Many...many peeps into Nascar down here.

Wow,,,honboy actually sounds like a nice cop. I live in Ohio and I have yet to run into a nice cop, they always seem to be bothered when they pull me over,,,lol. I actually have alot of friends on the force, used to work out with them for many years and became good friends.
I drive mainly old muscle cars that stick out like sore thumbs so I get picked out of the crowd pretty regular for really stupid things.
I average getting pulled over about 3-4 times a year but generally never get a ticket, it's for stupid things.
I run model year tags on most of my old cars, which are registered as historical vehicles, then an affidavid is filled out to run model year tags. Most cops don't know what these are, and I get pulled over regularly for this. Since it happens on a regular basis I keep all the paperwork with me now,,,it just speeds up the process so I can get on my way faster.
I have been pulled over for exhaust, running drag radials, and other silly things, since my older cars have the option of wearing just your lap belt and no shoulder belt, the cops seem to be pissed when they walk up to the car and see the lap belt, thinking they had me nailed for a seatbelt ticket. Also been pulled over for improper wearing of a seatbelt, taking the shoulder belt and putting that behind me, as I can't stand it rubbing on my neck,,,, I could go on for days about but back to the original question of front plates.
I don't run front plates on either my 97 Z28 or my 02 SS. For alot of reason really. They are required here in Ohio.
My 97 was bought new here in Ohio, but never had the front plate installed, therefore the holes are not drilled, and I cannot bring myself to drill the holes. So in an attempt to at least have them displayed, I mounted the front plate under the car on the air dam. If you stand back from the car about 10 feet or so it is visible, although it's not out in direct sunlight. I have still been pulled over for this, being told this is a grey area and I could get a ticket, but the last 2 times I have gotten off with warnings. I mean geewiz it's displayed and if you look for it,,you can see it. Putting it on the dash is not an option for me,,,damn thing flies off and it's kinda sharp, could cause an accident or something, or fly off if your in an accident,,,so I avoid this idea.
I don't have anything on the 02 SS either,,,since it has the optional SS front grille and no place to mount a plate. Haven't been hassled with this car yet, but if it persists I may do the same thing and mount the plate on the air dam under the car, it may be a grey area but at least I am making an attempt. Eventually I will run into a cop that is a total ass and give me a ticket,,,but that won't make me drill holes in the car,,,just can't do that.
Plan on moving to Arizona soon, hopefully they don't require the front plate,,,anyone know? Larry.

He was cool, liked the car alot,,,,and just told me to slow down, he didn't want to give me a ticket and make my insurance rates to go up, and liked to see these old cars on the road,,,,honest,,,he was that cool. So there are a few good ones out there. Larry.

No front plate required in Florida, currently driving around with a temporary, waiting on my vanity plate.
yes the long island cops are pricks most of the time, thats what you get when you are the highest paid officers in the country. i have been ticketed about 5 times for no front plate in my old Z28. i had to throw it on because the $90 tickets get expensive after awhile, especially when you are getting tint tickets too.

so yea these bastards love giving tickets. not the topeka police dept unless they are motorcycle cops. but shawnee county. i've gotten tickets for: IMPROPER USE OF A STOP LIGHT!, exhibition of noise, exhibition of speed, illegal exhaust, illegal fuels, suspesion of street racing, speeding 68 ina 65, exhibition of deceleration, improper lane changes (it was slick and my tires slid a lil bit on the ice, wreckless driving (burnout) exhibition of power (second gear chirp) the list goes on. but the topeka police have been cool with anybody who has a car that makes some actual power.

Why don't we have cops like you where I live...

A town cop was going to give me a ticket for "not keeping right" because I took a wide right hand turn, in the middle of the night, in a deserted development. No kidding :squint:

Even so, I will be bringin my T/A to NY to cruise on DPA/231, most of my family lives in North Babylon, and I wanna race my uncle's worked 69' Buick GS 4 speed and my cousin's WS6, before I do, I'm puttin in a line-lock, gonna be puttin on few smoke shows. Probably comin back wit a handful of tickets.

Florida hasn't issued two plates in 84 years! That's a whole lotta metal and paint saved or a lot less work for convicts, depending on how ya look at it. Next time one of you get pulled over for it, tell em' your trying to keep the weight down for racin'...just to see his face.

Hey I wonder what they would say if I stuck two beer cans in my fog light holes?
Besides "Your under arrest" that is.
I could play dumb and tell 'em, "I thought that's what those holes were for."

i just bought my 02 WS6 in Killeen TX, was heading to Dallas when i was pulled over for 95 in construction zone (55 MPH limit) :brick: only had the paper plates. He didnt say anything about the bird cover on the front and gave me a ticket for 65 in a 55 (non-construction). I thought i was going to jail but guess i got either a cool cop or a lazy one who didnt want to deal with me at 2am.:nana:

I'd say you got a cool cop, and sounds like you didn't give him any shit. Respect for the police when you get pulled over goes a long way I've found out thru the years.

Well unless there were workers at the job site it doesn't count. They post signs as you enter that state traffic fines double when workers are present just like a school zone. But giving you the 65 was way cool. Couple of us Waxahachie fbody guys are going to the track on the 10th you should come. www.texasmotorplex.com

I have never been stopped for that. Nor while being stopped (for speeding) did the officer bring up the fact that I did not have a front license plate.
I have never had a front plate. Not on my SS and not on my Goat.

I think it's a retarded law and we're like the only state that requires it. I lived in Memphis, TN. for about 3 years. A front license plate is not a law there or for your car to be inspected. People were driving around with no bumpers, no hoods....lol. Crzy shit

Well Shelby I don't think Dallas cops really worry about it. They might use it if they think your drunk. But in the smaller towns like (Waxahachie, Bardwell, Edgewood the three places I have either been pulled over or know someone has) they do whatever they want. They have to support their Christmas party some how.

When I bought my T/A I lived in CA, I drove it for a year and a half with only the back plate installed, since thats the way it was when I bought it. I figured I would play dumb if I ever got pulled over. I had motorcycle policemen pull next to me twice and motion for me to slow down on the freeway, but I never got stopped. The only time I was stopped in CA was for 78-79 in a 65, the police officer asked me to slow down and watch for deer, no ticket...

I live in GA now, so no worries since only one plate is required...

I was towing my racecar to Atlanta dragway early one morning with my truck. I was taking a new route through backroads, and small towns. I came to a small town and missed the 30 MPH sign. I rounded a corner and a police car was waiting for me with his radar gun. I was doing about 42 MPH so he pulled me over. The small town police officer said I was driving a little fast for a 30 MPH zone, then he complemented me on my Firebird and started telling me about his Camaro. Being a diehard Pontiac guy, it was tough to listen to his small block chevy talk, but he was young and probably never had the chance to drive a real Pontaic powered Firebird, so I was polite and talked shop with him for a few minutes. Eventually he asked me to slow down and let me go on my way, no ticket...

Some of those police officers are way cool, and I respect what they do.
I would not want to do thier job, no way...

:shower:

My first time getting pulled over happened yesterday.. I was just leaving RPM, and I see a cop circling around the parking lot, and im like ehh w/e. So i turn on my car and start heading home, but the cop starts following me. I went to the right lane, he followed me.. I went to the highway, he followed me, tailgating me the whole way, and whenever I moved, he moved with me. I was doing everything right, speed limit was 65 and I was going 63,64 the whole time, but I knew that I would see the lights pretty soon. About 10 seconds later, i see the lights and pull over. The cop comes to my car and first, he circles around the car and tells me that it's one of the nicest cars he's ever pulled over. After that, he asks me how old I am, and I say i just turned 17, and he goes off on this lecture about how the car is too powerful and has too much HP, and im like w/e. He asked me about the windows and everything and also about my exhaust and what i had in the car and all that. I acted really nice to him and said Sir like after every sentence. He told me I was a really good guy and all that, but still gave me a fix it for my tinted windows, no front plate, no lamp on back late, and also a Provisional License ticket (because I had 2 other passengers) And I tried to get the provisional license ticket off, but I guess I wasn't good enough :brick:

Sounds like he needed something better to do. Thats a lot of tickets for stupid crap.

Not to mention I HATE it when they tailgate and follow you around trying make you nervous. Its breaking the law to follow that closely, but apparently they are above the law

Sounds like he picked on you for your age and that you got a nicer car than he does. I would fight that. Also take your passengers up there as witnesses and tell the judge he gave you a lecture on why you sholdn't have that car and pulled you over while you weren't doing anything wrong outside of those couple things and explain you just got the car and it came that way and you felt like you were being harrased because of your age and the type of car. Its none of his business why you have a powerful car. Sorry that just pisses me off. I know I need to :bomb:

Sounds like typical Sacramento police to me. My family still lives out there. I visit and drive around out there 2-3 times a year, I have found they are pricks and I don't drive out there that much,,I couldn't imagine everyday.
I read in the paper out there how they were cracking down on anycar that didn't look stock,,,big exhaust pipes sticking out,,,,speed stickers in the windows that would indicate something done to the car etc etc....and they were pulling over any car that looked modified whether they were doing anything or not, looking under the hoods, and if anything was found to be modified, even as simple as a cold air intake the cars were being impounded. I have that article somewhere. It actually makes me chuckle when I read it,,,to think that cops can get away with this kind of behavior. This was a couple years ago,,,not sure if they still impliment this or not,,,I know there were several groups that rasied a big stink out there over it.
It was all in an effort to put a dent in street racing, guess it was a problem out there,,,but this created a problem of picking on innocent people that drive nice cars,,,and it still sounds like the cops are doing that,,,,and you just became one of the many victims,,,sorry to hear it. Larry.

If it makes you feel any better, I get the same treatment here in Ohio. I drive old muscle cars that stick out like sore thumbs, and they follow me around looking for something to pull me over for. I can actually watch them in my rear view while they are talking on their little shoulder mic,,,running my plates while they follow me,,,,cracks me up. I always look over at my wife and start counting 5-4-3-2-1 and then the lights come on,,,,lol. It's such a regular occurance for me in the summer time that it's more of a bother to me anymore. It rarely ever results in a ticket, they are just poking around looking for something, you just have to brush it off and go about your day.
At least it's warmer out there in Sac today,,,it's 3 degrees here,,lol. Larry.
