i recently had a set of richmond 3.73's installed and now my rear end whines like a banshee after i hit about 40mph and only when i have my foot on the gas. when i get to 80 is has this really low rumble like a really fast vibration from my rear end. i have the optional auburn posi in there and it had 2.73's before. did i need to upgrade my carrier or did the guy not put everything in there correctly. i replaced the bearings and everything. i haven't pushed it much past 80mph because the sound gets louder as i accellerate. any suggestions?

These rearends are famous for making noises, but I would have them check it out just to be safe.

The Guy That Put Them In Did It For $180. He Is A Certified Mechanic, But He Didn't Even Know I Needed Limited Slip Additive. I Don't Have A Warranty On The Work And The Guy Is Kinda Dodging Me. Do I Need To Take It To Another Shop Immediately Or Can I Wait For This Guy To Get The Time To Check It Out?

I would at least take it and let someone look at it. The back lash is probably not set right. You don't want to have a bad wear pattern on your new gears.

I WENT THROUGH ABOUT 4 OR 5 HEAT CYLES BEFORE I REALLY GOT ON IT. I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S HOW THEY GET BROKEN IN. :hmm:

I'm A Newbie When It Comes To Mods And On A Limited Budget So I Can't Afford To Break My 10bolt. I Do Want To Get On It But I'm A Little Nervous With All The Noise That Wasn't There Before. I Just Want To Make Sure I Don't F Myself.

My understanding is that "Richmond" gears create more noise due to the fact that the teeth of the ring and pinion are cut more straight up and down opposed to angled like the stock gears. I have a set of "Timken" gears (3.73's) that are very quiet both at acceleration and deacceleration. The break in proceedure is very important to follow to avoid scalding the gears and proper tooth alignment.

take it to ashop and have them adjust the rear end like they said it could be too much play on the p bearing what i would do is take it some where and have them adjust it witch might cost some change but dont beat on the car too much if its set in wrong you could break them
I had the 2:73 and went to the 3:73 and it does make a little noise but only at 65mph and nothing before or after that. It sounds like they did not set yours up correctly. The mechanic that did mine asked me to buy the stud kit from thunder racing to make it easier to set up and he had done a bunch prior to doing mine. I would get it checked ASAP.

Take the car to a shop known for building or modifying cars (not a dealer or a local guy whom does mileage repairs). It won't cost that much to have the clearances & end play checked & re-aligned. Basically, an hour of labor. Probably $75.00 or so which is much less than you will spend to put another rear end in it if there is aproblem. Also, ask them the best proceedure to break it in. This should be done very soon.

Very soon, a wear pattern is established on a new gear set after about 500 miles. Once they've broken in, you are not likely to get the noise to go away, no matter how they are setup.
Manufacturers will tell you to go 500 miles before running them hard, but the heat cycles are really what you are after.
Hopefully you get it fixed before its too late!

ok, so the shop i went to charged me $350 to inspect my diff. they said i needed new axles, bearings, posi, gears (due to chipped teeth) and quoted me at $2300. after shitting myself, i quickly began calling around trying to find a shop to get a second opinion. i found one and they inspected everything for FREE and said i didn't have any chipped teeth or bad bearings and deffinitely no bad axles. they said the pinion depth, preload and backlash needed adjusting. for 2 hours of labor and 2 shims it cost me $169. but since i ran it so long, the wear pattern was set and the whine is still there but not quite as bad and only from 40-45 mph and the vibration is gone at 80mph. so i spent $889 total to upgrade from 2.73's to 3.73's. this shop said they would have installed them for $150 which is less than the "favor" my guy did it for. it's official...i'm retarded.:hide:

Man, I think I'd be reporting that first guy to the better business bureau.
Also, FYI - $2300 to rebuild a stock rear is insane! Check one of the site sponsors, complete bolt-in 9 inch or 12 bolts usually run about the same $$$ and offer much more durability!

its set up wrong.
i've had my richmond 3.73's for a few months and just as quite as my original 2.73.
it takes a mechanic that knows what he's doing. had richmonds done by other mechanics and the noise was horrible.

i had it checked and adjusted by another shop and they said the wear pattern had already been set so i'm going to have some noise until i replace the ring and pinion, but it's been months and i haven't had any problems, just a little whine at 40mph, then it goes away.

i went to a general mechanic and it was $300 something, but then I went to a transmission shop and they said $150 if you provide the gears and bearings. They make a big difference.

I had a richmond in my 98 and it was noisey i had it checked at the place i had it put in and it never went away. but i was told they were just noisey gears.

another thing to add to this post i had a ring and pinion put in that was a GM part along with a auburn pro series posi unit. NOISY as hell maybe this one is set wrong but i believe that it is the posi unit.

Just to add my 2 cents, but when I had my 2.73's replaced with 3.42's it was recommended that I also change the carrier, so I did that at the same time and never had any problems with noise or anything else. My gears were made by EATON. Anyhow, I hope it all works out for you.
