Torque Management

I am planning on getting my car tuned soon (a4) and was curious what deleting the torque management would do? Would that be a smart thing to do on a daily driver? I was also wondering about changing the speed at which the car shifts to OD. What do you consider a good speed for a car to shift to OD? Thanks

In my experiences, I wouldn't turn the torque management off, unless you have a built 4l60E or are planning to have it built. Having it turned off will lower your ETs, but it also reduces the life span of the 4l60E drastically.

Mine was turned off during my tune.... Been running great for the last year+.. and I beat the hell out of my car!!!!

If it reduces trans life I wont disable it. Kitt what doess it do? Can a difference be felt??

Turned off TM in my car years ago - no problems yet. TM only comes into play during what GM calls "abusive maneuvers" - like nailing it from a stop. Mine's a daily driver and the stock TC lockup (if that's what you mean by OD shift speed) is fine for me - at part throttle about 42-45. I don't beat on the car though, just a couple times/year at the track. Leave it enabled to be safe.

well I mean I can be cruising at pretty low speeds and my car will go into OD and the car is sluggish at such low speed in such a high gear. I thought maybe while I was getting a tune I could get them to make the transmission not go into overdrive until maybe 55mph or so? I mean I realize the same thing can be acheived by running the car in D or 3rd then shifting to (D) but I dont like to do that.

All the torque management does is retard the timing a little during the shift to make the hit a little softer on the trans. If you think ours are bad try driving a late model auto mustang. You can really feel it pull the timing out on them.

I can't remember where I got the following description but I thought it was from a GM source. My apology to who ever authored it for not having the source:


Torque management is a function of the PCM that reduces engine power
under certain conditions. Torque Management is performed for the
following reasons:
To prevent overstressing the powertrain components.
To prevent damage to the vehicle during certain abusive maneuvers.
To reduce engine speed when the IAC is out of the normal operating
range.

The PCM monitors the following sensors and engine parameters to
calculate engine output torque:
Air/Fuel ratio
Mass Air Flow
Manifold Asolute Pressure
Intake Air Temperature
Spark Advance
Engine Speed
Engine Coolant Temperature
A/C Clutch Status

The PCM monitors the torque converter status, the transmission gear
ratio, and the engine speed in order to determine if torque reduction
is required. The PCM retards the spark as appropriate to reduce
engine torque if torque reduction is required. The PCM also shuts
off the fuel to certain injectors to reduce the engine power in the
case of an abusive manuever.

The following are instances when engine power reduction is likely to
be experienced:
During transmission upshifts and downshifts.
Heavy acceleration from a standing start.
The IAC is out of the normal operating range.
When the driver is performing harsh or abusive manuevers such as
shifting into gear at high throttle angles or shifting the
transmission from reverse to drive to create a rocking motion.

The driver is unlikely to notice the torque management actions in the
first two instances. The engine power output will be moderate at
full throttle in the other two cases.

The PCM calculates the amount of spark retard necessary to reduce
engine power by the desired amount. The PCM disables the fuel
injectors for cylinders 1, 4, 6, and 7 in the case of an abusive
manuever.

Thanks for the info. I am going to ask my tranny man who just rebuilt my tranny about it. I have a 3 year warr. on my tanny and if it wont affect that I am disabling the torque management.

well if it just reduces power, do it and drive it safer. when goin from R to D, make a full stop, etc.

Yeah I remember one time in my 84 H.O. z28 I didnt come to a complete stop when shifting from reverse to drive (it was a automatic) it messed up the linkage to the carburator and my car wouldnt shift out right. Easy fix on that car though. I baby the z28 I have now. I havent even done a burnout in it. I do get on the gas a little occassionally but thats about it.

Hey break neck speed, If I were you I would just get the TM deleted out. Don't run it buy your tranny man, he will tell you it will void the warranty. If you ever have any tranny problems, they will never know the TM has been removed. At least I wouldn't think they would, I may be wrong though.

I dunno man my tranny man is a drag racer himself and told me to abuse the transmission and have fun!! LOL He also does head,cam, and total rebuilds on lsx motors.
He will build em any way you want. He said if your not abusing the transmission you arent having fun! hahahaha Really good guy who knows how it is.

After having my Y3000, transgo shift kit, billet 2-4 servo, and 3.73's installed, the tuner either deleted or nullified the TM system in my 01 Z28.

With these modifications it changed all the dynamics of the vehicle.
