EDIT!!! here is the thread for the news article:
http://www.ls1.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1049806#post1049806
wlel... liek the title says. i was in a cobalt, goin about 55, a deer ran in front of me by like 20 feet or so (im bad with distances) and i slammed on the brakes, swerved once i let off the brakes, and could not regain control cuz i immediately lost control. in my third gen i could have gone 80 and had more control than that...
i was on a country road, and there was a field on one side and trees on the other... luckily i went towards the grass... but anyways, i went straight into the ditch and rolled 2 or 3 times.. im not sure how many cuz it all went so fast.
i was the only one in the car, and the scariest part was hearing the windshield smash. i ended up upside down in the ditch a little further up the road than where i initially hit cuz i rolled so much. rolled down (or up.. lol) the windows and crawled out. pulled out my cell and called my dad first, then an old man wlaking came running to help me, called 911, and said he was a paramedic so he helped keep me still and what not.
nothing hurt at the time... emts got there and thought i snapped my neck. i had slight pain in it that they were relaly worried about. at the hospital after all teh cat scans and what not we realized it was neck muscle damage and not bone so nothing toooooo serious...
other minor injuries like bleeding inside my arm from being pinched on sumthing  some pretty big lumps on my head, and some shoulder pain.
walked out of the hospital a couple hours later with aspirin. i shouldnt be makin jokes, but im takin this as calmly as possible.
i never liked that car anyways :spit: i told that to all the emts and they laughed so hard.
i can testify.... seat belts save lives. i could feel it holding me in my seat the whole time i was rolling and had i not been wearing one i would have been dead... no doubt about it.
think about it... in a situation where i would have died without a seatbelt, i wore one and walked out of the hospital in a couple hours with some bruising and muscle damage needing only aspirin... pretty amazing
i hope i do not have to pay for any tickets or fines... but i may... idk how much our insurance deductible is but its pretty much totalled.
honestly... the worst parts about it all are that now that i sold my car and just totalled my moms, we only got 1 car in the house, i have to pay for the car (surprise) and i missed homecoming... my girlfriend was so disappointed :date: i felt relaly bad, but what am i gonna do....
cliffnotes: i rolled my mom's cobalt, swerving for a deer and hitting a ditch. seatbelt saved my life

Yeah, had to drive a rental cobalt for a week.. hated every SECOND of it!! So I know what you mean. You're lucky all you got was a sore muslce.. when our van rolled.. I SHATTERED my 7th vertebra... won't heal, and I get migrains from it.. and pretty much complete memory loss before the acciudent... took me 2 weeks to accept the people that took me home were my parents.. Had to relearn spelling, friends, everything.. it sucked! So just count yourself REALLY lucky!

cuz cobalts suck with crash ratings and it was a big enough deer to fuck me up. i figured, why go straight into it if i KNOW it will cause an accident... why not try to swerve and have a possibility of avoiding it?
i didnt expect the suspension to suck THAT bad

i know a friend that has a ginormous older f250 turbo diesel full cab, extended bed... tons and tons of pounds... he hit a horse and went backwards... totalled the whole truck. so i would imagin that a car that could fit in that truck bed would be fucked if it hit a full size deer (altho a fraction of the size of the horse, u all understand what im sayin)

I nailed a buck at 55m.p.h. on a highway in a Cavalier, all that it did was push the rad back and fuck up the front end. No deer is gonna push the engine back! Come on, deer are around 90 or more pounds and they will not cause as much damage as you think!

Glad to hear your in good shape ATC! Here's a link to a crash I posted awhile back. The guy was driving a 95 Carmaro doing a bit over 90 hit a deer and it basically exploded and pieces of the deer were splattered over 3 blocks away and seeing the driver was drunk he took out 3 telephone poles. Some how he actually survived the crash, but ironically got fried when he tried getting out of the car from power wires. You never know if it's better to hit a deer or not in a car.

i hit 3 deer in 5 months when i was a senior in high school. i hit everyone of them without swerving - i had a blazer i would have rolled with out the ditch.
i did swerve to miss one in my camaro last spring. it was early spring so the road was cold. So i passed this rice burner on the highway i was going about 80-90. a deer steps out on the shoulder of the road. so i slammed on the brakes and turned into the other lane. well i ended up doing a complete 360 and then another 180. I was really nervous about the car i had just passed hitting me. anyways i came to a stop on the side of the road in the other lane - like i had just pulled over i was so straight. awesome experience. but i got very lucky

I remember when we went to texas with the quads, people told us stories about hitting cows. THAT would suck, i dont think there's any surviving an impact like that if you hit it head on. Like hitting a brick wall.

IN the 1980s my Aunt hit two grown bulls in the highway, thank god she was driving a full size Buick. Of course it totalled the car, but she walked away with very minor injuries. She said what saved her was the three bourbon and cokes she had right before the wreck, she was relaxed.:shots:

Dude, that sucks Alex, I'm glad you're alright.
On the bright side, at least you don't have a slobalt anymore. You're right about the thirdgen, they may suck but they handle like they're on rails.

i think its somewhat the cars fault. like i said, if i were in my third gen i could have had more control going twice as fast

maybe true, but it still isn't the cars fault. You have to know how to control the vehicle you are driving and know it's limits. It all comes with driving experience and getting into wrecks is part of gaining that experience.
Now you know that all vehicles don't handle like your f body, and you have to drive each vehicle according to it limits. Even if you were in your f body the same thing may have happened.
You never know, if someone with more driving experience was in the same vehicle, in the same situation the outcome may have been completely different, or could have been worse you never know.
Not trying to give you a hard time, i know you have been through enough... but i just don't think you should be blaming the car and you should just accept the fact that shit happens. When wildlife are on the road anything can happen regardless of vehicle handling capabilities or driver experience.
Also, about your mom getting another cobalt because they are safe cars.... by the looks of the damage to that thing, and the fact you walked away un injured i would agree that it is a pretty safe car. I can pretty much guarantee you that if you rolled your 3rd gen in the same manner, you would be hurtin alot worse.

I agree. That car is fucked something fierce, and you walked away with a couple bruises. Slowbalt ftw personally...
