tranny wont shift on its own!!!

my tranny suddenly started not wanting to go into 3rd....and im scared got danm it....when i put it in over drive it will go through 1st and 2nd but gose into neutral instead of 3rd...if i manually shift the gears it works fine!!!i cann switch 1 to 2 to 3 to OD.....what do you guys think could be wrong!:giveup:

If it did it manualy to I would say the 3-4 clutch but its odd that it does ok , My best guess would be failing inout sprag but ussually it wont move in the OD position when that happens, Try describing in greater detail ?

ok...if i try to drive the car like a normal auto...like put it in OD(overdrive) and go...the car will go through 1st and secound no prob...but when its time to go to 3rd...it just revs up but wont go anywere like if it gose into neutral...but if i drive the car like a manual as in i start in 1 then move to 2 then 3..it shifts into 3 no prob....then from ther i can go to OD....i shift each gear like at 2500 rpm no prob.....what do u think??

I would have to go with the inout sprag letting go then, I mean the symptoms are strange but thats the only scenario I can think of that could give that result . What happens if your allready in 4th and suddenly kick down ?

havnt slammed it in 4th yet......if it is what you think...is it expensive/hard to fix...of just go with a new tranny?

Well most shops would onlybe willing to rebuild the trans, Personally if its high miles I would replace it with a performance unit.
