I was comming home from LA on the 5 South. Doin 70ish in the fast lane. It was dusk and I see a car comming in and out of traffic. I pull behind it and tail from about 100 feet. I see i's a M series then I see the 5, I'm like - I'm gunna get smoked . Well I'm layin it into 3rd hard and needin to shift to fourth a few times. Well we got caught in traffic then the road opened up. Nice. I get behind at 70 about 100 feet back. I nail 3rd and as the rpms come up I start to reel him in. At 130 pullin 1 car. Holy cow ! Well after that he wasn't tryin so hard to loose me and just stayed back. Nice. I can't believe how strong this LS1 is. Oh he was by himself and I had 2 adults in my car !

Torque is low - I looked it up. I'de probably get my ash handed to me off the line but at high speed 380 tq on 4000lb gave him a disadvantage. I have a lid, LM and FTRA.

Unless you're running mid to low 12's I'm calling b.s... Low on torque?? They still can bust out 4.3's 0-60, and run the 1/4 in low 12's w/ a trap speed good for high 11's. They'll run to the limited 155 mph all day no problem....
If anything you'd of had him off the line and soon he'd of caught up and walked you hard till 155 where he cuts out, ever heard the saying "Horsepowers how fast you hit the wall, torque is how far you take it with you"... Think about it..

Actually HP is just a number you get from an equation...
HP = TQ*RPM/5252

This was off a fsst roll..... let's review...., don't quote 1/4 mile or 0-60 numbers to me. BTW 4.3 0-60 show me that link, that's impressive. but older VW's had fast 0-60 but couldn't breaK 110 MPH. So 0-60 is irrelevant from 70 on up. I reeled him in, he backed down. He had plenty of chance for redemption as I still had 20 or more miles before I turned off the highway. Make sence.

M5 Stats (http://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/M/M5Sedan/techdata.htm)... I've seen many magizines say 4.3's... 0-60 Irrelavant? That was me showing you that they can't be that low on torque, pulling 4.3 0-60's... Your totally right from 70 on up the 0-60 is irrelavant, though so is torque. Going from a quick roll/highway speeds or god forbid, crazy top speed runs, power is what pulls the car not torque... Don't go on saying horsepower is just a number derived from torque, and it's actual torque pulling the car at highway speeds. I can easily prove you wrong. One easy one. Tell me why you'd downshift on a highway kick? To take advantage of what? Yeah, that's right..

That's not the point, I'd just like to know his mods, to even see if he could even keep up with one. Each to his own on that comment haha :p. Driving a 500 hp fully loaded luxury sedan that'll hold it's own with the world's best cars, set the cruise on 155 w/ the A/C blasting on the Autobahn for hours on end, is worth every penny if you ask me..

You need to know his mods.....right. But sorry, money is the point of everything. How did the original poster get his mods? Money. How did the BMW driver get his M5? Yup...
So since I'm a poor guy, humor me.....a guy spends $81,000 for a car that goes 4.3 0-60, we'll use 0-60 since you like to quote those numbers. :burnout: For 1/8th of the cost of an M5....or about $10,000, a guy can buy a bone stock base model LS-1 Z28 or Formula and will hang with the M5.....LS-1 = 0-60 4.8'ish out the box. With H/I/E the LS1 car is easily at 4.3. With NOS....even faster....and we still haven't broke $15,000.
No one's debating that the M5 is a nice luxo barge that is fast for it's size. But bang for the buck, man...I keep tellin' ya that is what it's all about.....unless you have Bill Gates type money. :naughtywa

When did I say you couldn't get ANY other car that fast for less money?? That wasn't my point. You ever ridden in an M5, beat the balls outta most all domestics in all expects, handling, ride comfort, powertrain, and in some cases performance, you name it it'll probably be superior. You get what you pay for, that is all I'm sayin, I'm comparing stock to stock here, apples to apples. You're totally right that you can make a LS1 faster, or just as fast for less money. Wasn't what I was saying at all..

This thread is getting way off topic and I'm starting to loose interest.....Since the original post dealt with an LS-1 car vs an M5, I thought that is what the debate was about, not about how "superior" the M5 is supposed to be to the rest of the cars in it's class or the world or whatever other planet you are thinking.
But Ok.....Stock for stock in the same class.....maybe a strech in your eyes.....The CTS-V would be a domestic competor for $30,000 less. If you want to go outside the luxury class....the new Z06 would own the M5 in every catagory you could come up with. Ironically both cars are LS powered.

In case no one noticed he is using the stats from the BMW page I have yet to see a car mag get near 4.5 0-60 it's been more like 4.8-5 from what I remember seeing in MT, C&D, and R&T with the 1/4 in the very low 13's I remember them being somewhat dissapointed considering the hp #'s.

You're right it's about whether he beat a M5, and like I said, I don't believe he did, and he isn't providing a list of his mods to prove otherwise. I never said there wasn't any domestic luxury performance sedans that'll hold there own for less money. Just providing facts that in a M5 I still feel you get what you pay for. Even the new Z06 wouldn't totally walk all over the new M5's, beat it yes of cousre it will, though leave the 4 door 4100 lbs M5 in the dust like it's a stock '89 Civic verus a '99 T/A? Nope, it won't be that far behind...

I highly doubt BMW way overrated there M5's... I read in magazines pre-realease that they thought it'd be sub 4.5's in 0-60. I've read MT's M5 vs E55 road test, the M5 beat it in almost every category E55 is MT rated at 4.2's. I have yet to read complaints about insufficient accerlation, for myself. The race he stated was from a highway kick, and as I told him before horsepower numbers are gonna play a factor in that race not, dead stop accel numbers. That's how this whole 0-60 and 1/4 time shit got started.

The M5s should be top end monsters since they make their 500hp by spinning to 10k RPMs. Just like the last M3s made very little torque but spun the little inline 6 over 8k. The M5 uses a 7 speed SMG transmission too, so it should have an easy time staying in that powerband.

Where did I ever say it would beat a new Z06? I know new Z06's are monsters, they trap crazy speeds in the quarter, off the showroom floor. Just stock for stock it wouldn't totally "rape" the '05 M5. That's all I was saying... Yeah, of cousre I race Metro's, a GM, is a GM, is a GM, right?

I guess 20 car lengths IS a close race for a mustang. :lmao:
Car and Driver numbers:
M5 0-60 4.2 0-100 9.4 0-150 20.7 1/4mile 12.5@118
He may still have been breaking it in. They limit revs to 5500 until the 1200 mile oil change and check up. Actually, in high revving lower torque cars they are going to be more difficult to beat from a roll where they can put the car right in its sweet spot with a couple of pulls of the paddle. If gearing and rpm didn't result in performance how do you get a 4100lb car to run the 1/4 at 12.5 at 118mph? I would bet broken in cars will see low 12's and break 120mph.

I ran a brand new M5 a couple weeks ago from a dig to 90 mph and beat him by a solid car length+. He decided to rice out and keep in it heading towards a red light which he slid half way through while making a right turn and almost hit the median on the other side of the road. He must have been pissed :D

Hi guys, my first post in the new LS1. Had many on the old forum by the sig Flash.
For what it is worth, the new M5 has been run by several mags in Europe and everytime it hit 125 mph in mid 13 sec ( M6 high 12) and 0-62 (NOT 60) in mid 4 sec.
For those that is interessted, I can give you some links to videos from both M5 and M6 against some other nice cars. Just give me a hint. Dont want to start posting links to other cars in my first post.
It is close to the E55 until 100 mph and then it walkes away, unlimited it will run +200 mph and a delimited version can be bough from BMW.
They have just recently recieved you shore and most of them are probably still fresh. Until the first sevice they are locked in P400 mod. meaning only 400 Hp.
They are very fast but a modded LS1 will run away and hide from it. At least some of the really fast LS1`s you guys have.:)
BTW: It will not run until 10 000 rpms, its more like 8500 rpms. I have had only 1 hours seat time in one, but it was the fastest thing I have ever driven.

I believe you took him out but regardless of that... the LS1 is the worlds best 'bang-for-buck' engine.
No engine can gain so much power from so little modification for so little money. I have little more than the bargain basement sedan in Australia, yet I can take 90% of cars at the lights.
By the way, BMW have always been underpowered, even the M series.

Underpowered, compared to what ?:)
1979 M1, 3.5 277 Hp
1981 M5 3.5 286 Hp 160 mph 4 door saloon was not bad in the early 80 ties.
1984 M6 3.5 286 Hp
1988 M5 3.5 315 Hp
1988 M3 I4 2.3 - 2.5 200 - 238 Hp
1992 M5 3.8 340 Hp
1993 M3 3.0 286 Hp
1996 M3 3.2 321 Hp ( M Coupe/Roadster from 1997 same engine)
1999 M5 V8 5.0 400 Hp
2001 M3 3.2 343 Hp
2005 M5 507 Hp
2005 M6 507 Hp
The "problem" you have in the US is that it was not until 2001 you got the real M engines in the 3 series, not sure when you got the V8 M5.
Before that you had to deal with a modified normal BMW engine put into something they called M3 for the US marked. That thing was nothing against most of your V8 powered cars.
It had to do with price and the fact that it HAD to be available with auto. No M engine car has ever been available with auto and to date that still goes.
But I agree the LS1 is a very capable engine, and extremly easy to midify.

Hi, first post at these forums. Recently sold my '94 cobra and may be in the market for an early ls1 in the next couple months so i figured i'd read up a bit.
FYI the new M5 can beat a SRT-10 on a racetrack- obviously it can't outdrag an ls1 that someone modified for that express purpose, but i don't think it's fair to call anything a luxobarge if it can beat a viper on a roadcourse. The M5 is an amazing car even at its pricepoint, as is any ls1.
