:hmm:Hey everybody, I've got intentions of getting my camaro painted since this guy at another shop kinda screwed it up. I love the color of it now but I also love black. I'm in a weird situation because one day I want it black and the next I want to repaint it pewter.

If I repaint it pewter, I'll still do the two tone thing that I have going on now.

If I paint it black I'd switch the flames to chrome.

any help is appreciated!

ps, when I get the paint job, I'll get the needed body work.:tired: (its late here)

I'm a little biased, but as a guy who originally wanted a black car, I'm kinda glad I couldn't find any, and went with pewter instead. It has to be REALLY dirty before you can notice it. :)

But black looks SOOOOO good when it's clean... there's nothing sharper!

Ultimately the question is, how much time do you plan on keeping the car clean? :)

I agree... nothing looks better than a shiny black car... until 5 minutes later when its dirty. I would stick with pewter.

Black by far looks the best, but on your car i'd say pewter would look better. Just cause of your style of hood/ground effect/etc.
Just my opinion.:yup:

You know my answer... :D. As a owner of a pewter Camaro, I have to give my nod to pewter as well! Just add black graphics to it if it's possible with that hood.

BTW do you have any good large pics of your car? I like the hood, but want to know if it's possible to add stripes. Hence I want to bust out the Photoshop to find out :D.

I think the same exact way.

The way I think of black mixed with all the curves in my car, such as the hood and body kit, I think black wouldn't let those show up as good as they do with pewter. But black is bad ass! hahaha

Everything you guys said about dirt on black is true also. However, I already do spend most of my life at the car wash when I'm not too busy, but I don't really want to add to it with extra work of cleaning black.

One thing I noticed about pewter is that my Camaro has been dirty as hell before and I still get compliments on how clean it is! Then I kinda stand back and look at it again and it DOES SHINE even with tons of dirt:haha:

I do plan to repaint so it will look fresh. The last guy who did my black spoiler/berger panel/mirrors and all that didn't really mask my car and I have clear coat every where. It WAS a mess. I've done what I can as far as getting it off of my windows. I even had paint on my tires. This is why he gave my car back at night I see. and get this, it was like a day or 2 before a carshow!

Needless to say I'm not going back there! The man has skills when it comes to airbrush art(he used to work for marvel comics) but, I don't think he's really good at painting cars. :growl::brick:

And Graphicsgod, I have an idea. When I send you pics of my car could you throw a few different sets of wheels on it too? Also, I tried to get some graphis for my hood but it was too hard to get the sizes right. I may try again later.:werd: < these smilies are FUN!

atleast $2k-for engine(hopefully with transmission) and $3-4k for labor.

I don't have that kinda cash right now. College student man!=s:Owned: until I graduate :haha:

I wish. We could take up cash from everybody we know and help me out:haha:

I plan to spend like $4k on turbo and like $1200 total for nitrous.

that looks badass but it must be a bitch to keep clean. personaly im a clean freak and i drive my 99 rs as a daily driver about 50-70 miles a day when im not in school or working.

and i spend 10 hours every sunday cleaning my car and its red. so i dont know how you can keep that thing clean.

i average about 50 miles a day during school, about 3 a day is down a powdered dirt road. i wash it like twice a month cause there is no point in keepin it super clean it will just get dirty again

I would stay with pewter because it would be much easier...chances are your engine bay doesn't need repainting, and they can concentrate on the outside of the car. If you switch to black and want it done right, the engine would have to come out to paint it and that's gonna be some big $$. Not to mention they can screw shit up putting it back together...I fix so many cars at work with electrical problems because body shops messed them up (i.e. grounds in the wrong place, broken wiring harnesses etc).

7camaro7
11-13-2005, 10:07 AM
damn, never thought of that. I did think of getting it (completely) painted. I do want the engine bay and door jams painted. I found a guy who said he'll paint it(door jams, under the hood), do some body work, and take all the small door dings out for like $3500 and he said he may give cash back if it's not too bad. Sound like a good deal?

Also that deal was for the all black idea I had way back, but now I need to ask him to two tone me the same way it is now with 90% pewter and 10% black.

Expensive, but normal for a total repaint. I'd say this option is much better than the all black one :D.

I was thinking the same thing! I paint cars in my spare time and ive done quite a few. When you change the paint color it is a royal pain in the ass to make everything match so that it doesnt look like you just slapped a paint job on it! If you go with black the hatch jam, door jams, engine compartment and many other small parts will need to be repainted to match. If you do a repaint with the stock color you wont have to worry about the engine compartment and many of the small parts, you should really repaint the jams either way cause it looks like shit to someone that knows paint when you do a half ass job. You get that line in the jams where you can see the old paint and the new paint it just doesnt look good! Definitly stick with the pewter unless you really are prepared to spend a lot of money to do it all and right!!

By the way thats a crazy body kit looks good though.

I'd actually rather get it all done right because I enter carshows and I want the best chance to win. My car was wrecked really bad before I got it and the inside of my left fender is like just primer right now. You wouldn't notice unless you look though. I said that because the shock tower braces and stuff are painted. I do want to get the whole thing redone so I'll have fresh new paint to take care of. I love a freshly waxed and polished car. I think my car used to even smell good on the outside:haha: That was before I had unwanted clear coat every where.

Thanks for the compliment man!

How much is a good price for a complete paint job (the whole 9 door jams under the hood and all that)?

How much is a good price for a complete paint job (the whole 9 door jams under the hood and all that)?

Paint jobs vary a lot!!! There are different types of paint and different types of paint processes. You can go to maaco and get a paint job for 400 bucks, but thats a shitty paint job with no jams painted and crappy quality paint. If you want a good base/clear coat system with jams painted without some custom scheme paint job ive seen them go on average for $1500 - $4000 and as high as $10,000, depending on the car and color/type of paint. Now if you want the engine compartment done that will make it go even higher especially if you want everything removed!! Any body work will increase the fee also. Its not so much that painting is hard its just A LOT of work preping the car for paint!! Prices for custom paint work usually vary on what you want and the shop. I'd recommend you call some local places and get an estimate for what your looing at getting done. Good luck and when you get it done definitly post some pics!

It's really a hard decision. Keeping it clean is not a big worry for me because my Camaro gets an at least weekly cleaning. I'm thinking if I redo it pewter it will look a lot better than now and shine a lot more.

If I go black, mannnnnn, I love black! hahaha If I go black it will really REALLY shine after I hand wax it and everything... black shows scratches a little easier though.

The thing I love about black is that on a really sunny pretty day and when the car is shining at it's best, it makes an illusion. One day when I was at home there was this guy from my town out in his black SS and it was so clean and from a distance I couldn't even tell what color it was because the sky was reflecting off of it. Ever since then I've really really been wanting black.

Pewter on the other hand allows me to experiment with the two tone thing I'm doing which is fun. Pewter changes colors too especially at night. This color is nice to me because it looks like it just says "Expensive" hahaha:haha: That's what I think when I see that color, its just like Ooooooooo.

Black is cool and stealth and flashy and mysterious and all that:haha...

I'm so confused between these two colors.

I'm having my Firehawk repainted as we speak. They are repainting everything except the rear deck, and the area above the rear bumper, since those areas had no visible chips or damage. With the base/clearcoat being used, plus color sanding, replacing the stripes and door decals with new one's etc., the total as per the estimate is roughly $3,700. I'm also going to clear bra the front of the car and mirrors, which is going to run me another $500. Supposed to be done this Tuesday, and they've had the car for over two weeks now.

This is my favorite pic of my Hawk, taken at Gateway Park in New Jersey during the GMHTP Shootout earlier in the year.

Rob

Clear Bra is a layer of film from 3M that goes over the paint to protect it from chips. It's virtually invisible to the eye, and works very well. It's usually applied right at the nose of our f-bods, and a strip of at least 12 inches onto the hood. Runs a couple of hundred bucks at most any tint shop, more if you can find one like I did that is going to go ahead and do the bumper and mirrors too.

Intresting! Might have to look into that in the future.

Define "virtually invisible". Can you see the difference from an area covered and not? And does it come off eventually, Like pealing or chipping?

I'm having my bumper, hood, headlamp doors, and mirrors done this week. I'll post pics once I get her back.

I think different shops will have different capabilities, so I can't comment on what the one's near you can and can't do. The shop I'm using here in Denver does extensive work of this type on the front ends of Corvettes, Mustangs, and F-Bodies, so I'm comfortable that I'll get good results. From what I've seen though, it all comes down to dollars and cents, and how far you want to go...

The cars I've seen, you have to look close to see the transition and any seams. From over 5' away, I couldn't tell it was in place. As for any film over a surface, preparation and quality of install are going to determine life of product, along with climate. Again, one of the cars that I've seen as reference has had the clear bra for two years, and it still looks great.

I saw a NBM formula firehawk at a show over the summer that had it done. The only places i could tell it was on was i guess the outer seams... It was a bit white in coloration so maybe he waxed over the edges and it was just wax that was just left behing:think:

I may get the hook up(sponsorship or discount) with this new paint company. I heard they do candy paint, so I'm getting a little happy. Yea, FloridaZ's car is nice. I don't know what I'm going to do, BUT I will do something because my paint right now is crap, at least I think so.

Don't hate me but I actually thought about a bright ass (hurt your eyes from the brightness) GREEN! hahaha, I'd like it to be shiney as hell though. I've really got this thing about being as different as possible with it. I like how it looks with pewter too. I just really need to freshen it up.

I've thought about: Dark purple metallic(that could look black and purple), blue in candy paint, green in candy paint, red in candy paint(red isn't me though), I've thought about white, black, orange, and that's about it.

All I know is I'm going to bust my ass to get that money by next summer! Hopefully I can get that magical set of rims(with $1000 tires on too):xfingers: I'm probably going to try to find the cheapest tires possible just to hold me over. I seriously believe that when I get these rims, I will get a Dunlop tire sponsorship. That means a new set of tires every year for free!:drivin::woot::werd:

Man, hahahahaha:haha: I was up all night last night talking about THAT to my girl. I was thinking of getting a ZL-1 theme going on. I was thinking if the car was black and doing the scoop in silver and making it go over the roof, then over and under the spoiler. I wasn't sure if I'd let the silver stripe go all the way down the back.

I also thought about painting the black part of my spoiler silver when I paint the rest of the car black. Not sure yet, I doubt I'll do that especially if I make the stripe go futher down the rest of the car toward the rear.

As far as the hood goes I think It'll look good in silver because I plan on redoing my ram-air decals in black and putting black tribals on top of the scoop, roof, and spoiler.

In that picture I think black looks good as a heck though.

Black is a great color for a super clean car sitting inside all the time under the lights, ...

It is not a great color for anything driven on the roads. Two blocks down the road & your rear bumper 'shelf' is already dusty & dirtier than hell, ...

Looks great when it's clean but, ...

Do something different! I like the 'orange' idea, ..., But I'm biased, ...

Since a paint job would cost me $3500 rims about 3500, tires 1000 and a system about 1000 I'd be better off getting my self an 02 6spd with black leather like I like. This is a perfect chance to make your car unique as hell. Paint it a non-stock color that will make our jaws drop.

Im with Louie. Try something differint. There is lots of shades of gray that you could go with, or just go off the map......IMO...

When I get my new one I will. I have a few in mind already. I'm a fan of color changing paints and I love gloss and shine.

Black is the most upkeep and most hassle to paint, plus the enormous expense to change color if done properly to have the paint looking good and staying w/o peeling in every nook and cranny...I'd stay with the original color.

Congrats man.:yup:
If your gonna make your new one look like your old v6 i'd save a few hundred $$$ by buying a Z28 over the SS.
That's if your going wild with the appearance again.:)

Thanks! Yea, I've thought about it. I guess now it really matters of which one I find first with a great deal! I am not buying it from a dealership because they try to rip everyone a new one on the price and milage. By that I mean it is possible to find an SS with a great price and low milage too! I've seen a couple on the net, and they are rare. The one I get I hope will be fully loaded too!

+1

When body's are painted at the factory, they get into all those crevices that you will catch hell painting black. Engine bay, door jambs, and numerous other places. It won't look right if you change it.

I am with Dip, sell the V6, and go get a black Z or SS. Problem solved, power found, owner happy.

Edit:
Maybe I should have read the rest of the thread!

I got mine for 8 grand (85K, 326 whp & 4.10 gears). I added rims, cam, intake, Z06 brakes for about 4 grand. 12 grand for a 372 whp snake eater that looks good and will put your face in the windshield when you hit the brakes!

That was private party by the way, dealerships will put one in you :leghump:

Sweet! What color is it? By the way, let me add my .02 on the Pewter color. At first, I wanted a sunset orange color LS1, but I couldn't pass up the deal on the Pewter one. But after owning the car for awhile, the Pewter color has really grown on me. It ain't quite silver, and it definitely isn't brown, it is an odd color, but nice looking. Plus, it never looks dirty, all you have to do is clean the rims and voila, you got a clean car.

Black rims look good on silver cars, maybe you could put some black SS wheels on it. But you can't go wrong with chrome either. Put some Foose wheels on there. Maybe a blue cold fire paint job, like I saw Overhaulin' put on that chics El Camino. That would be Sweet.:yup:

Or, you could just put an LS7 in it!
