I have a 99 Z28 with the stock 16 inch rims and I'm looking to upgrade with 17x9.5 ZR1 replicas. There's a tire and wheel package I can get online that comes with 275/40-17s, but I'm thinking with the 9.5 inch width on the wheels, the wheels might be able to handle something a little wider, like the 285s. The wheel has a 56mm offset.

If I can get the 285/40-17s on these rims, will that little extra width fit without having to bang out the wheel wells?

Also, does anyone know how much bigger around this tire is going to be than the stock 245/50-16's I've had on it so far? I just want to know if my speedometer will be affected by these new tires.

As always, any help is appreciated.

yes youll have to recalibrate your speedo....

and yes they will fit. not more than a hair bigger than the 274/40

good luck!

The 285/40R17 is 26.1" tall, versus 25.7" on a 275/40R17, which is good news for the V-6 crew, which speedos are calibrated for 28.1".

A 285/40R17 will fit a 9.5" rim flush versus a stretched look with a 275mmm tire. I can get a pic up if you like this evening.... -Tim

I have this identical wheel/tire combo on my 2002 Z28. I took them off my 96 Z28. 56mm offset. They fit perfectly, no rubs-no hits and I did the hose mod. Check costco online for tires. I got the KDWS for $143 each and they mounted, balanced, installed for free. If youre going to get the wheels on ebay like I did, the SLP center caps fit. Also, check partsforyourcar.com for lug nut covers. They are cheaper than SLP, and you are going to want spares. SLP will only sell you a set of 20.

Thanks for all the help. Any pictures of this tire/wheel combo would be greatly appreciated! And yeah, I'm looking at the KDWS since it's been a pretty good tire for not much $$$ on my present rims.

Also, I'm looking at Lakeshore Wheel and Tire to order from online. Anybody have any experience with them? I'm a little more nervous ordering wheels online.

I got mine on ebay for $550 plus shipping. They have them on there all the time. Same wheel as Lakeshore. Chrome. Polished or painted are even cheaper.

If you are a Firestone supporter, take a look at their new Wide Ovals, a touch cheaper than BFG's -Tim

285/40ZR17 will work fine on the 9.5" wheels. No modifications necessary.:)
