Stall converter and overheating?

Hello forum. I'm a rather noob when it comes to performance upgrades.

Friday I'm purchasing a Z28 with 17K miles and some mods. One of the mods is a 2800 stall converter ( or something like that ). I read somewhere that there is a chance of that mod causing heating problems. What should be done to the car to prevent this?

Just put a transmission cooler on and that would be all that's needed. Check the f/s section for one or summit sells them for about $45-50

Might even already have one - most people who put in stalls do an aftermarket cooler at the same time.

*edit* Is the aftermarket cooler something that I can see by peeking under the vehicle or is it hidden? And if I have to install one, how hard is it to do?

Try looking in front of the AC condensor to see if its already on there. If he knows what the hell hes talking about in terms of mods, chances are that the car has one already.

looks just like the condensor its self except smaller. Mine is 10"x6" I think.

He told me the 2800 he had installed doesn't require a cooler. Does this sound wrong?

Yank recommends anything 3000 above use a cooler. My yank i'm running in my FWD buick makes that fugger run hot, its not uncommon for a higher stall to increase the temps by 30*-40* depending on how large. Example, anything under 3000 (approx) on mine is technically, slipping, producing heat.

Yea, do yourself a favor and get one anyway. You don't want to take the chance of screwing up your tranny because of increased friction.

I agree.. get a cooler anyway, blowing your tranny cause of that is stupid and expensive....

It is not the stall speed as much as the diameter of the TC, the smaller the converter the hotter the transmission will run.

even if you dont have a aftermarket stall, heat is the main killer of automatic transmissions.
a cooler is totally needed for any size aftermarket stall

If your vehicle is stock height (not lowered) the B&M 3 Qt. deeper aluminum pan will also help to keep the temperature down.

Yes, this is wrong, buy a cooler or your tranny will go adios real fast. Heat kills automatic trannies faster than anything.
