exhaust setup

i am new to this board and i drive a 1999 firebird . i want to mod it . i was thinking of doing exhaust and intake first . i want my intake from slp ( cold air intake and lid) , but my question what exhaust ? i was first thinking about get flowmaster 80 series and putting a dynomax or slp buillt muffler. but i want to make my 6 to sound like a beast and like a v8 . what do you guys think ? And i heard that if i get the bullet muffler that replaces the cat , is that true?

You wont make your car sound like an 8. There I said it. Lower RPM range you can make it sound nice and deep, similar to an 8, however, higher RPMs you'll always sound like a 6, there is no way around it. That said, I HIGHLY reccomend if you want to mod your six, to get a catback exhaust, not just a muffler. You won't see all that much gain from a muffler as compared to a catback exhaust. If you're looking for something throaty and obnoxious, try SLP loudmouth catback, if you want something a little more quiet, try an edelbrock catback. There are some soundclips on firebirdv6.com's message board stickied in the exhaust section if you want to have an idea of what they sound like. And just for reference, I dropped 3 tenths of a second when I installed my catback. You can't go wrong!

no i wanted th catback to , but an extra muffler on top of that. so the flowmaster fmuffler and the bullet one too.

why do you want to buy an extra muffler?? I used to have a '99 v6 camaro with Borla the 3" adjustable. It sounded nice at idle and low but if you stepped on it you got the v6 sound. No way the 6 will ever sound like 8.

Yea I was kinda confused at what you ment as well. If you want 2 mufflers, your best bet would be to have true dual exhaust all the way back, otherwise, you'd probably just be hurting flow with more than one.

TSP rumblers flow good, all aftermarket setups are quite close in terms of gains, however I haven't heard one in person before so I can't really say how it sounds.

is b&b exhaust any good? i like the 4.5 inch tips but does it sound good? and do you think it really gives you 17 rwhp ? thats what they say.

I run rk sport headers, 3 inch catco, slp loudmouth. Mine sounds like a weedwacker

I had and STILL love the sound of edlebrock. Summit racing sells it for under $300. Best bang for the all around gain's

BB tri flow has gained the MOST rwhp/ rwtq than any other cat back out there for the v6 BUT is the MOST expensive and HEAVIEST

thats what i've heard to too and it doesn't flow as well.. thats why i got the magnaflow setup. I love it and some people have said its a lot like the borla just less expensive... I've been told mine sounds great for it being a 6

stay away from Flowdisasters, I run Off road pipe to a 3" Summit Glasspack then 3" into exiting dual 2.5" outlets. Sounds good with mine but not for a stock setup. I personally think Magnaflow sounds best for near stock setups. Stay away from traditional tube chambered mufflers, they wont give you the sound like a low restriction will. Hooker Aerochamber, Dynomax UltraFlow round, Spintech will all give good flow results. I have been eyeballing the Flowtech Warlock muffler, its a traditional muffler that you can uncap. Havent heard it through the chambered part though. -Tim

So... I've got a stock 3.8, and I'm looking to upgrade my exhaust... more for sound, but I definately don't want the thing any slower. Is it possible for me to get a good muffler and take it to a muffler shop for the pipes (2.5 inch would be good?) without going much over $300? It's a birthday present, so I don't want to make them spend too much. I definately don't want a ricey sound coming from a Firebird, but if I can't afford the better guys, are there any other options?

Edelbrock Catback is $283 at jegs, I dropped .3 tenths of a sec just from installing it on a completely stock car. I am totally satisfied with this setup, not insanely loud, sounds good, and a great price. Just my .02

go with magnaflow. its $400, and the tips look great. took me and my pops 3 hours to install and the hardest part about it is lining everything up. if you want a sound video ask for my email or something because i cant post on here yet.

I think I've heard about every combination there is, and in my personal opinion, if you're leaving the headers and cat alone, go with the SLP Loudmouth with dual/duals. BUT, before it's put on, have them weld a stainless deflector in the pipe at the split into the dual set-up. Essentially, the pipe goes straight back after the cat, then after the axle, y's into two pipes; the deflector pushes more air to the far pipe, and helps to balance the rasp out in higher rpm.

Otherwise, I'd STRONGLY suggest the following: True duals ran through Magnaflow mufflers, Dr. Gas X-pipe, and QTP longtube headers...bolted to an LS1. Sorry, but after a few attempts in the ol' 6, this is the only thing that satisfied me!

Iv got Flow master 40 on my 4.3. It sounds good under 2k but anything higher than 4k it is really blurry
