Like I posted before, I installed my 4.10s this morning...should have done this a long time ago. Didn't take long to get them in. I was surprised to see a torsen staring at me when I removed the rear cover, I could have sworn this car had an auburn. I had a slight heart attack because I heard you need a paddle kit to make the 4.10's work in a torsen, but for whatever reason, my paddle slid back in like butter :usa:
ps. If you have traction control remove the rear sensors from the backing plate...it allows the extra 1/8" you need to push the axles in & drop the c-clips.
I went straight to the track afterwards :drivin:
It is like driving a new car. Lost a good 3-4 tenths in the eighth. Sixty foots 1.9X all night with a best of 1.92 on street tires (not sure why folks say its impossible to launch on 4.10s).
My car's just a bolton car fyi, 00 M6, lid/longtubes/catback, SFCs, tune, spec stage 2, and now the 4.10s.
My best run was a 8.3 @ 86 mph. I know it has more in it, I was riding the rev limiter all night (have it set low). Going to bump it back tomorrow and try for some 8.20's.

Everyone tells me I should get 4.10s when I order my 12 bolt but dammit, I just can't bring myself to do it, even though everyone says the T56 and 4.10s are a great combo.

4.10s should have came stock in the m6 f bodies
they are great

Where is everybody getting their 4.10's? I plan on that being the next mod.

I think 4.10s in a 10 bolt is asking for trouble though, seeing how easy it is to break one with stock gear ratios. Hell I know a guy who broke one with a V6.

Try them in a Moser 9 " with Detroit Locker, and slicks....they are even better.
Good choice on the 410's

i had 4.10s in the 10bolt on street tires after got rid of the 12bolt... it was nice with the street tires but didn't put any DRs on there cause it'd blow the rear to hell.
v2.0 would haul ass though =)~ she's missed..... kinda ;)

if 4.10's were stock, then the amazing gas milage we get would be non-existant.
kellie, i thought you have to break in a rear end b4 tracking it-i hope you didn't fuck it up!

Very cool to hear! 4.10's and a 6 speed is such a great combo! Congrats on the quicker ET's!:usa:

my mileage didnt suffer too bad when I had the 4.10s It averaged down like 2 mpg.
what was weird was going back to stock from 410s. it really does feel like a totally different car.

yea gas milege wont hurt that bad in the car just drive it around 65 70 on the expressway and you wont notice it that much, and you should break in a rear end before running it hard.

Man I have an M6 and I'm worried about blowing up my rear. I don't track race it, but I do kick some ass on the street occasionally. What to do what to do. 6th gear on the highway sucks ass right now....higher gear ratio will prob make it better huh?

I love the 4.10's on my Z28. Helped me get in the 12's with my basically stock Z28

What sucks about it? are you talking about the gas mileage or the acceleration? 6th isnt meant for acceleration. I get to what ever speed I plan on cruising at then I put it in 6th and set the cruise.

5th and 6th are overdrive gears your main gears are 1 through 4 for power the other two are cruising gears.

I guess techincally you should break them in but I didn't. I drove home, changed clothes, and went to the track. Went to the track again today. 20 or so passes later and they are still fine

I realize that the 5th and 6th gears are overdrives and pretty much just for cruising on the expressway, point of my post was that from what I've heard 6th gear can actually be usefull on the highway with 4.10's. I think I remember reading somewhere that the car will pull a little better in 6th with 4.10's

I'd imagine that is true. It is annoying when you are in 6th and start climbing a steep hill.

I definitely use 6th a lot more often. On the highway at 70mph I'm turning 2,000 rpms in 6th.

4.10's will be just fine just as long as you don't run Slicks.

10-30-2005, 09:51 PM
Shit, I turn 3200 at 70, but that's with a M21 and 3.08s out back. Really gonna shoot my mpg to hell with the 3.73s I plan on installing

I guess that is one thing I like about 3.42s, thanks to them I probably get around 16/27 mpg. Highway mpg is variable though depending on how fast you go, about 100mph I'm sure it would be over 30mpg.
Mr. CarelessAndImprudent
10-30-2005, 10:04 PM
Seriously, 30mpg?
slo4mula
10-30-2005, 10:06 PM
I got 32MPG with my 6speed and 3.42s. I haven't been able to since my header install though.

10-30-2005, 10:07 PM
I'm sure if I stayed at 100 for a few hours I'd average 30mpg. 100mph is covering ground fast and still turning maybe 2200 rpms in 6th gear.

If you have 2k laying around you can pick up a gear vendors unit.

I've read that too. I haven't had much time to really tune my car with HPtuners. I graduate in December and maybe after that I'll find a day to do so. I also haven't been on a long trip since getting my headers.

If I had the money, I'd get a TKO from Classic 5 Chevy or whatever they're called. 2700 for a TKO five speed, driveshaft, crossmember and mounts

sigh, i wish i could to 4.10's but i have a A4, i think that would seriously limit my top end...i was gonna do 3.73's but i think i'll just wait and upgrade to a 9" when i get the money...

True, a co worker is building a 71 Z28 and he used a TKO. According to him it was easy to install too.

johnny you can't really ask me how hard the install was. I do rear ends all the time so for me it is very easy. I have written a how to that walks you through the installation process, you can decide for yourself if its something you can do or not.

Why does everyone say not to go with 4.10s in an auto... my buddy put 4.11s with auburn posi in his auto ls1 and he can do about 135 top speed... what do you need to go faster for? He can cruze at 80mph no problem.. not sure at what rpm tho.. id have to ask him

Don't forget, at 100 you are pushing a lot more air than you are at 70-75. Best fuel economy usually comes around 55-65 mph, unless your car is really slippery (low coefficient of drag).
My '01 Camaro SS has turned 29 mpg at 80-85 with the t-tops out, but I'd be suprised to get more than 25 if I could hold 100 mph for any real length of time.

With an M6 and 4.10s what would your top speed be limited too??
Same question only now the car is pushing 420RWHP???
Are 3.73s or 3.83s better than 4.10s?
What are the best gear manufacturer to buy from that wont whine like a bitch and be of good cost and quality??
Reason for so many questions is i'm ordering a big cam and i obviously need gears but i dont want to kill my high end. Gas mileage i'm not even going into that but i just want high HP and my gears to compliment eachother!

I don't know, I don't really take my car above 90mph. There are no 3.83 gears for our cars, just 3.73 and 4.10, get what suits you. I do 4.10s because I run the 1/8th and its perfect for me. My bf does 3.73s bc his car is well over 500hp and 4.10s would be too much for it.
Motive gears don't whine much...
NeeD4SpeeD
11-27-2005, 09:19 PM
Well my car will probably sit around 500RWHP come his summer so you think i should stick wit 3.73s or with the 4.10s that everyone loves?

Not much more then that... Car is basically for street/strip use.. Just curious about top end because of the rice burner assholes and other shitty cars that want to attmpt to take me in high gear... Just want to make sure theres enough speed to beat em!

Well, since 4.10's should have you pulling hard up to 110 in 4th gear (assuming stock rev limit), I'm sure you'd have no trouble putting a few greyhounds on them ricers!:lmao:

If you want to hook, you'll need a good tire with any gear and that kind of power. Difference between the shouldn'tbe more than a tenth. Bigger difference would be at the big end. 3.73's will put you about 1/2 way through 4th gear, 4.10's closer to peak power for better trap speed.

I have demonstrated that is not really true. On regular street tires, after I added 4.10's, absolutely every 60' was a low 1.9x with a best of 1.91. If anything it made the car very consistent and easier to launch.
