A timely thread, since I am looking for a new converter.
I have heard that TCIs have been unreliable.

I just ordered a Vigilante 3800 with a single-disk lockup.
My current converter, a Yank PT4000, has been slipping. I had a Vigilante 3000 a few years ago with no problems.

I just had a Fuddle 3400 2.1str put in last week, ran a 12.861 and was hot out and a DA of 4000 feet. I'm still getting used to it and need a shift kit or tuning, getting the pulse width modulation under 2,000 rpms when car lugs a little.

I have a Yank 3000 coupled to 3.73's, love the feel, however I should have gone at least with a 3200 to 3500 stall.

Whats this pulse width modulation thingy? Does it have to do with lockup?

Fuddle 3000 3.73 gears here. Great combo. Lose traction from a 2nd gear stab at 30MPH (no kickdown to 1st). Kickdown to 1st and fooooooorget it...

09-25-2005, 02:38 PM
So what is STR?
HC2000Z28
09-25-2005, 04:26 PM
It stands for Stall Torque Ratio
a torque converter multiplies the torque produced at the flywheel.
someone correct me if i'm wrong but if you have a STR of 2 then the torque being applied to the transmission is 2X greater than the torque produced at the flywheel.
That is my understanding
This is significant for acceleration at lower speeds or a dead stop
BlackHawk T/A

So its best to get the highest STR they make?

The higher the STR , the more likely you are going to fry the tires . LS1 has about 350 ft lbs torque x 2 =700 (1.7 =595) . This might help .

Or rather, 350x2x3.06x3.23=6,850 ft/lbs of torque going to the rear wheels (for me, A4).
An engine is nothing without gears behind it :)

Are you in city traffic driving 30 miles to work , I would say no . If you drive to work on the interstate , I would say yes . If you only go out week ends and nights ,Yes . I think my converter is the best thing I ever did ,it is a little soft off idle compared to stock ,besides this I can't tell the difference . The lock up works great .I have an Edge Converter. 1-888-350-edge , I am not a salesman just a happy customer.

me too. 3500. :)
Right after I made that post my TCI went for a dump and took out my trans.:brick: It never did lock up properly.
$3000 (including new converter) later, I went with a Vigilante 3200. It locks up as requested everytime.:)

No, you don't need to change your gears. You may have to tune your shift points so you don't hit the rev limiter.

I hate to be a spoil sport, but the problem with this thread is that Torque Converter performance is directly related to engine output. The exact same TC can have different stall speeds on different motors. A TC has to be matched to
the application for it to be the most useful. So unless you know what applications all these TC's are being used with it's rather meaningless. That's why leading TC manufacturers like Yank have so many choices and prices.
Here is some info from Yank to give you the idea:

I can't get the columns to go side by side here, but if you pick say #3 in the list of mods go to the corresponding line under your gear ratio. If this is just too confusing, here's a link to the same thing laid out properly: I'm not yet allowed to post links, so you can go to the Yank site and find the wizard.
