Ok i recently bought a 92 rs that had a 350 swapped into it.
the problem i am having is the piece will start for me 85% of the time and then the rest of the time is will click and do nothing. checked all wires. its all fine. checked battery, fine. Checked fuses, fine. I am clueless as to why some times it will start and others it wont do nothing.

Stick or auto? Starter getting switched power? Perhaps your main power to the starter grounded out of fried on a header/manifold somewhere?

Lots of things to check... we'd need more info.

Otherwise, take the starter in for testing. They sometimes get a bit sluggish and will act like that before straight up failing. $40 or so should get you a reman'd starter, so might just be a good time to try to see if that fixes it?

i said i checked all wires including starter. its not the starter because when it actually works it is instant. I do notice the security light flashes when i first put the key in. other than that i really dont know what else info you need. its auto. and before you suggest its not the start safety. Sorry if i seem like an ass but this is my only mode of transport and im new to GM stuff so im very frustrated.

Alright bud. If it clicks, you either have a starter which takes too much power to turn over, a short somewhere, a weak ground (block, battery, etc) or an electrical system to weak to crank it over. Those are pretty much your choices.

If it was the security light getting you, it wouldn't even click. It would just be a complete no go. You have a bad starter or an electrical issue, just my $.02

BTW, most TPI'd motors turn over VERY easily with little cranking...

it only clicks the first time then the light comes on and it wont do anything after that for anywhere from 3-15 minutes.

Well, the only other thing I can see wrong is some flaky PASS key system failure... might try a different key, or replacing the key you're using. If that doesn't work it might be the cylinder itself. :unhappy:

Check this out for more info (http://www.motorage.com/motorage/data/articlestandard/motorage/292005/169809/article.pdf)

Is the key you're using really worn? Does the ign cyl show excessive signs of wear and tear?

both are original and yes they look very very used.

Hrmm...

Here's one way (http://vats.likeabigdog.com/)

Or you can always ebay a box to bypass it (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GM-VATS-or-PASSkey-II-Bypass-Module-For-LS1-and-LT1_W0QQitemZ220121692559QQihZ012QQcategoryZ33720Q QcmdZViewItem)

I'd say try replacing the key and or the cyl bud... hacking the PASSkey system might not be the best idea if you're not up to it.

The key should be about $25 @ the stealership. The cylinder will be in the $80-100 range and will require quite a bit of labor to replace...

Might try autozone too, I just looked it up and it seems you can get the key and a new cyl for like $60 if you're up to doing the install yourself.
