When at the track I always leave it in drive and let the computer take care of the rest, but I keep getting ppl, mainly the old school guys, telling me I should put it in first and man shift it up to drive ? They say it is ez'er on my tranny, just looking for your guys 2 cents...btw I have tryed it and it seems like the computer takes over anyways ?

I always manually shift, but that is just me. Get just a little bit extra out of each gear.

Well,,,,,,,,,,,,,,with my 98 when I let the computer do the shiftin' I was ALWAYS .2 to .3 tenths slower. I would manually upshift just as or just before I felt the rev limiter. Need to time the shift so that happens. I don't think it is any easier either way.

4L60E's engage only 3 clutch packs when launching in drive.....I launch from 3rd...that engages all the clutch packs...then shift from 3rd to drive when appropriate.....better launches...easier on the trannie.....less shifting....

same here on the street. I raced from 50 roll and the computer downshifts first so there's a half sec lag, but the I manually put it in 3rd and floored it and it was better response.
never tried 3rd to D at the track. I guess as soon as 5500 rpm hits in 3rd I can manually do a D.

If you are going to let it shift on its own, use "OD" not "D". This will prevent the overrun clutch from robbing 2-3 shift oil on the 2-3 shift. When you use "D", the overrun clutch comes on on the 2-3 shift taking away oil from 3-4 clutch apply. Either manually shift it, which uses the overrun clutch on all three positions 1, 2, 3, thereby not robbing any of the 3-4 clutch apply oil. The overrun clutch is not on & never comes on in the "OD" position. Same for the 700R4.
