I've been talking to "malsop" on here, he's the guy with the red t/a from Bullrun on spike tv. He might custom build me a ws.7 and I inquired about an A6 b/c i do so many road trips with the car. he said:
We'll hook up a th400 with a "gear vendors overdrive unit" that replaces the current tailshaft on this trans and bingo 6 speed auto. I think the 700r trans is the 4-speed unit and I guess I am not aware of any other 6 speed applications. But I may be a little old school?
So do you think something like this would work if tuned properlly or will it suck? any body know the gear ratio after the conversion

I think the TH400 + GVOD is the best option if you have the money. It's sweet.

just wait untill the 6l80e comes outIt's already out. Just not able to be used in our cars. I'd say that if it ever will be adapted to our cars, it'll be with a very expensive external controller.

1. It won't fit. It's WAY to big for the trans tunnel.
2. If you somehow cut the shit out of the floorboards and got it to fit, you'll still have a problem with the speedometer and rear suspension. You will not be able to connect the torque arm to the transmission like stock. Nor will you be able to connect it to the crossmember like many aftermarket pieces.
3. It's a pointless gas saving/cost cutting idea. The TH400 with converter (assuming cheap junk), overdrive unit and everything necessary to install it will run well over $3000 just for parts alone. Then you have to fabricate floorpans and a rear suspension.

isn't the trans am your daughter's car?
I've heard nothing but good things about gear vendor overdrive units. I have never heard of one in a 4th gen f-body mostly because they already had overdrive it them from the factory unlike alot of the 60's-70's cars there usually in. I say if you have the money go for it but be sure to post some pics when its done.

Also remember that a 4l60e is a dwarf in comparison to the Th400/GV combo... If you're going to be putting down big numbers this is definitely the way to go... The GV are good for somewhere around 2500 hp...If you get a TH400 really built then you could have a decently cheap 1000rwhp capable tranny combo... A 4l80e can be built for for this BUT they are somewhere around $5k if you go with one that can handle the abuse...

Not if you get the parts and build it yourself. Or have a local builder build it with good parts.
