I have 61k on an 01 SS. Initially through the years i had a noisy clunky rearend around turns. Last Year had the pinion seal replaced and diff. fluid changed due to a leak. In the past few monthes I've noticed a steady whine from the rear end... constant noise doesn't change with speed or clutch engagement. Also the clunky noise in turns is gone. Any ideas or should i just have it checked out?

Since everybody seemed so interested in my problem. I decided to post the results. Most of the bearings in the rear end were replaced and a grand total of 900 for the parts/labor at the dealer. Sometimes I really don't like these cars......did get a few offers to buy mine though while i was there.

I had a similar problem recently when I got my rear oil change. They put in the 75w90syn, and that was it. I made a 1200 trip and I had a whining noise from the rear end so when I got back home I looked in the instruction manual and it said that we're supposed to get a limited slip differential additive added on top of the oil change. 4oz of the additive. I'm almost betting money that's what your whining problem was.

I was hoping that was the problem initially but after the car heated up the noise was worse and almost a metal on metal rub than a whine. So i don't think i replaced the bearings for nothing. Thanks for the input though. Mine is gliding very nice now...lol.

was it because they forgot to put in the additive?
and you're welcome

They added the additive both times i had the fluid replaced. They also added it this time.
