:soapbox:
there, i said it. I've heard numerous stories from you guys that would be bigger wins if you down shifted to 3rd instead of 4th @ 70 mph. If you really wanna blow their doors off, get them down to 50/60mph and grab 2nd gear. :burnout:

Yep, 3rd gear redlines around 100MPH with stock 3.42's. So if you're going 70MPH, definitely drop back to 3rd. If you go to 4th you're going to be below 4,000RPM, which isn't in the powerband.
Now of course if you have 4.10's thats all different ;)

It all depends on your gearing and rev limitter. Mine is set at 7K and with my 3.73 thats 84mph at redline on 2nd gear. 3rd gear is good for 115mph at redline. I would want to slow down to 60-65mph so i can stay on second longer, plus at 70mph in second you can break loose the tires and loose time trying to keep the car on a straight line as the car, and if inexperience probably wreck you car.

yeah 40-50 for 2nd and 70 for 3rd are my fav spots to run from ..my rev limiter is raised as well to around 6800 so my top of 3rd is somwhere around 110 plus

Agreed! You still have plenty of room in third gear at 70 mph (with the stock 3.42s).
Of course, once I finally figured out my ideal shift points, I installed 3.90's and I'm trying to figure it out all over again. I dropped down to 3rd at 65 mph last night and it was starting off in a very strong part of the band! FUN! FUN!

Heres a good gear calculator to help you guys out:
http://www.f-body.org/gears/
Just input your year/transmission, tire size or tire height, and your rear end ratio, and it produces a nice chart :)

106 MPH with stock gears.
From 70MPH I would still use 3rd gear and I have 4.11's.

Damn. Can the car break loose if you shift down to 3rd @ 70 and punch it? It would scare the shit outta me to get outta control at the speed.

The Autos with the 2.73's are ridiculous!!
With 27" tires, 1st gear tops out at 60MPH, 2nd tops out at 110MPH, and 3rd gear tops out at 177MPH!! lol

Yea I know, I was't referring specifically to you, just to automatic equipped 2.73 cars in general ;)
I'm sure the numbers are much better with your 3.55's.

Lifted.
It wasn't much...but at that speed it is easy to over adjust.
And all my parts bolted on. :D

I think that is what happened to mightymouse at the dragstrip except he wasn't able to recover. It was sad to see his car all torn up, but he was ok which in the end is all it matters.
