The TH-400 is a beefier version of the TH-350. Just as good, but will take more punishment.

1979 trans am was not offered the 400 engine. This was only available on the 10th Anniv silver edition, and this only came with the 4spd. If you got the th400, then you got the 403 olds engine.

Starting in 1975 or 1976 the TH400 transmission was dropped completely from the firebird line due to fitting issues with the then new cat. 1976 was the last year a 455 was offered. The TH350 became the standard and was used up to 1978 on the 400 and 1979 on the 403. The 403 olds engine made its debut in 1977 with the W72 400 and both along with the standard 400 shared the TH350. After March 15th 78' the W72 400 could only be ordered with the 4spd. The base 400 and 403 were autos only from 77-79. In 1979 standard 400 was no longer an option and only the W72 400 came with a 4spd. After 79 the 403 was gone too.

As for the 10th Annv. or TATA a total of 7500 units were built. Of those 5,683 came with the 403/auto drivetrain and 1,817 came with the W72 400/4spd.

1979 a total of 116,535 TA's were built. Of those 8,539 Trans Ams were outfitted with 400/4spds. I build ebay auctions for side money and here is the last auction I designed. It is for a good friend of mind selling his 1979 4spd TATA with 19k miles on it.

I hope this helps.

MrBandit is absolutely correct. I just recently sold my '79 Special Edition "Bandit" T/A with the 403 6.6 (brought in '80) and it had a TH-350...GOOD trans!
