ls1 spark plugs

Im thinking of replacing the plugs for the first time in my z. from the look of it, it seems the plugs on the right side of the engine towards the back may be difficult to reach. anyone have any tricks for removing those hard to reach plugs?

On the passenger side remove the coilpack. :yup:

That's the hardest one to get to. I usually jack it up on that side and get to it from underneath. Still a bugger though.

If you remove the ps coil pack, use a quarter inch ratchet with 10mm socket on a short extension. A larger ratchet just wouldn't fit in the confined space for me. Also, I did not put that stud back in afterwards. It is just too hard to get to and the next time I need to move the pack I will have one less time consuming fastener to contend with.

gear wrench will help get the last coil pack bolt off...
dont put it back on either, dont need all them on for coils to be secure

Left side is doable. On the right I removed all the CP fastners but the rear. I loosened the rear and swung the coil pack up and out of the way. The latter gives you the same room as it it were removed. I installed the rear plug from the bottom to get the correct plug angle for insert. Can be tough on the top of your hands...take your time. Think about your wires at the same time if you have considerable time/miles on them. No better time and not something I want to do on a frequent basis.

I use a spark plug socket and another socket to go over that one which makes it long enough to get a rachet in there but not too long that it hits anything.

slp makes a special plug socket with the square part for the ratchet removed which makes it shorter. You use a open end or box wrench to turn it. I never changed plugs but this seems like it might help in tight spots.

I used a deep socket to break them loose then switched over to a regular spark plug socket (with rubber insert) to final remove. I thought there would have been problems as I have seen special sockets for sale and all sorts of other options. I had no problems what so ever. Matter of fact most would spin out with the long socket and fingers. I switched over to keep from dropping them.

I have headers so it is a little different. I use a regular plug socket with a 1.75" extension.
Done in about an hour with all eight.

Exactly. Take the $2 sps and cut 1" off of it, and you have a $30 SLP sps.
