With a stalled A4, and shift points edited to keep the powerband going (no dead spots) how well would it do?

I think a few guys have tried it... I haven't... so I won't be able to help you.

IMO you probably wouldn't be too bad as long as you can use the shifter to keep it in the necessary gear, and not let the trans shift whenever it wants.

The problem with that is its slow to shift when you tell it to...
And isn't that bad for it?

I start out in first and after I get some good high RPMs, I manually shift it to second. After that there is no need (usually) to shift out of second. Most National Champions running an auto use second gear exclusively. They don't even bother with first gear.
I experimented with changing the shift points, via HPTuners, but that didn't accomplish much. It is just better to do as I mentioned.

So it is do-able then? So doing a complete re-work of my crappy stock suspension on an A4 isn't a waste of money? That's basically what I want to know.
How many MPH will 2nd gear wind out to? I've never checked...
Also I think a tranny cooler would be a must before putting it through that kind of torture.
Actually a mod can move this to the Auto-X forum of they wish.

MPH should be high enough for pretty much any auto-x track... some tracks are even all 1st gear for the t56 guys... and very rarely you'll hear anyone going in 3rd.
a4 has also smaller gears in the rear, so I wouldn't worry about top of 2nd gear.

Yup, most track layouts are under 70 MPH, those are high speed layout. 70 MPH is the top of second gear with 3.23s and a 4L60E.

i ran one once in a a4 w/ 2.73s i kept it in first the whole time since the course i drove limited me to speeds less than 50 mph, which equals about 5500 with 2.73s

Actually, you should be able to run it up to around 80-83 mph before hitting redline.

Oh, sorry what I meant was that 70 MPH is in the upper RPM range of second gear, not that it was the most MPH you can get out of secoond. :)

Mine shifts from 2nd to 3rd at 90mph w/ 2.73s at about 6000rpm.
