Advice on automatic trans am

Well my car is acting up on me maybe someone can help.... I have an automatic 98 trans am and when I put it into drive my rpm's are on 1 and it forces my gear to pop in, real nasty making me cringe everytime. When I place it in reverse the rpms are at about.75 and the gears do not pop in. My car only does this sometimes but its been happening more frequently. Id be glad to hear any suggestions before I go give my wallet to a mechanic... thanks

im not sure what to tell ya except if it comes up that you need a new tranny or such, make sure you price around and find out EXACTLY what theyre goiing to put in. because if you go the route of gettin Heavy Duty parts put in every place will be a little different. also if you have to look for rebuils an such check out prices from the sponsors especially the tranny place (performancetranny or something), theyve got really good prices and really hook up the trannys they make. wish i had known about them when i did my rebuild :(
