View Full Version : Car cover...Yes or no ??

My car is garage kept, but I wont be driving it this winter in the snow, maybe once a month for a 20 or so mile run, when its dry out. Should I get a car cover and keep it covered in the garage ?? Would'nt it be bad to put the cover on the car after a run, because of brake dust, etc. ?

I dont want to wash it in the winter (chicago) after each run. The T/A tucks back deep into the garage ( 26 feet deep garage) but the door is opened daily as my wife parks in the garage also ( yes it worrys me...its my baby..the T/A) and I also use the garage as my exit/entrance daily to get to my other car in the driveway. When I wash and wax it now and go 4 blocks it gets dust all over it. Would you cover it...pros...cons... Thanks

Yes -cover it.Indoors the cover will be easier to deal with than outdoors-just don't rub up against it or anything cause a cover can scratch, but, there are no real drawbacks.

Make sure the cover can "breath"
Take it off once in awhile and check for moisture buildup and possibly "things" that like to "grow"
I don't trust special coating covers such as I beleive teflon as they seem to dull the paint.
A heated garage without a cover I think is the best .. just a dusting off once in a while.

What about a cover outdoors?

I had a cover on a car a few years ago and after rain/snow the water would still get through, maybe from condensation, not sure, but get the car all wet regardless...

Any way around this?

No infact if there was you dont want to keep the water out, your cover is designed to breathe so when water gets underneath which it will it will be able to evaporate off. the real prurpose of a cover is to keep bird shit, berries, leaves, sun damage, scratches etc. Not to keep it dry. If it was water tight, the water that would get through would never get out and mold and what not would appear.

:yup: Go with a cover indoors or out. But if you keep outdoors just make sure that it is secure or it flapping may scratch the car. If it can't breathe then when condensation builds up it can mildew on your car.

I use a NOAH cover from California Car Cover and the car sits outside 24/7/365, including winter.

Your concerns about brake dust (and other dust) are valid, the car should be clean when you cover it. Best thing to do, in my opinion, is get a duster and when you bring the car back in from the short ride, give it a quick dusting, and maybe even a quick wipe down with a detail spray before you tuck it back in.

Thats what I was thinking. Quick detail spray and a wipe down. Good news also this week...Im getting a gas fired 45,000 btu hanging heater installed in the garage from my buddy (HVAC guy):yup: so I think the detailing will be the trick, since it will be warm in the garage.

California Car Cover has very extensive selection of covers. Indoor ones are much better for your car, as they can be made of softer materials (one is flannel if I recall). You don't need a bulky weatherproof cover for use inside your garage. But also, don't use an indoor cover outside. Won't give you the proper protection from the elements!

I totally agree with the above statement & I also clean my car before the cover goes on to prevent scratches.

Then I use the side tiedowns with a bungy underneath to prevent excess flapping from wind.

Yes, tieing it down when it sits outside is VERY important. I learned the hard way one day a few years ago, I was looking out the window at the car and a huge gust of wind came by and blew the cover clear off the car into the backyard! :toetap:

Well, it works out OK if you are careful.

There are a few key points to remember with covering it outside.

The cover needs to be breathable and not waterproof. Dampness and condensation will form under the cover, and when it sits in the sun all day it needs to be able to evaporate out, or you risk getting bubbles in the paint.

The car needs to be clean when you cover it. And I mean spotless.

The cover itself should be reasonably heavy to withstand sun, bird and tree droppings, pollution, acid rain, etc. I can recommened the NOAH fabric from Kimberly Clark, and there are even heavier ones available that still breath and are safe for the paint.

Park it on asphalt or concrete to prevent excess moisture from the ground rising up under the car.

For inside "storage" an inexpensive loose fitting cover is okay. For use outside, a better fitting cover is a must. As previously noted, a loose fitting cover will flap in the wind and/or come off in some places. A loose fitting cover over a slightly dusty car should be fine.

Personally I think a car cover indoors is a waste of money. Not only that but people walking by your car in the garage are inevitably going to bump or rub up against it. Id suggest what has been suggested above. Garage it and just get a duster and dust it every once in awhile.

I don't use a cover when storing my car in the cellar but I do throw on as many old blankets as I can find. The idea is to make as thick as possible to protect against bumbs and bruises.

Also put 3 old comforters on the side of the car that sees the most foot traffic for same reason stated above....

I have one of those breathable California car covers and I love it. It's a great investment in my opinion. This probably won't apply to everyone, but I found it especially useful to be on the car during HAIL storms! No damage was done to the car whatsoever. A car cover is a good investment whether the car is inside or outside if you ask me.

As long as the cover is breathable, and guaranteed not to mar or scratch, then you should definitely use a cover. Covers are more liveable on cars that you do not drive everyday, because conceivably if you drive your car daily, it will get dusty or dirty during one of your trips, requiring you to clean it before putting the cover on it. You should never put a cover on a dirty or dusty car!!!

I have had my Noah California Car Cover for 4 years, and I have never had a problem or an incident with marring or scratching. It is excellent for indoor and fair weather to moderately rainy outdoor use. IMO california car cover co. are among the leading retail manufacturers of quality car covers.

Additionally, if you have traffic inside of your garage, then that is the prime reason that you will want a cover on the car. Good covers can prevent easy streaks or marred marks that can come from light brushes or careless "oops"....even from yourself!!!! My cover has saved my paint many a day from "little things" that go bump in the night!

I had a car cover on my Z sitting in my garage and a thief opened the door got in the car and somewhat pulled the car cover back down protecting him from people seeing him, he took his time stealing what he needed to steal and take. I come downstairs in the morning and i notice my car cover was a bit off, i go a bit closer meaning towards the drivers side, not only does the thief want me to know he was there he left the door a bit open and the car cover in between the door on the drivers side. If your in a safe area then i would highly recommend a car cover as far as dust is concerned it does a great job just gotta make sure you keep your car cover clean and its breathable as stateed above.

The reason you "think" that cover doesn't scratch is because your car is silver. If you look at your car in proper sunlight/angle I bet it is swirled like a mofo.
