17x9... stay w/ 275/40-17 sizes.
remember tha 275/40-17 are meant to be mounted on wheels from 17x9 to 17x11 in size.
you want wider, get wider wheels... I have nothing against wide... just play it safe.

Does anyone know what the widest is I can fit on my V6 with 16" wheels? I'm pretty sure I can fit 245s, and I'm about to order some Eagle F1 GSD3s, but I wanted to double check before I did that.

Really late on this, but I just wanted to point out that the Firebirds came with either 215s or optional 235s. The last owner put some Cooper Cobra 235/55s on it, so I was going a little bit wider... went with 245s, works great.

the 215's were on the 15 inch wheels with hub caps. they were only avaliable in 93 or 94. in 93-02 all the 16 inch wheels came with 245's from the factory.

285/40-17 will work fine and needs no modifications, other than a slight speedometer recalibration (nothing more than just plugging in the new tire size with tuning software). I've heard of some saying they had 295/40-17 on the stock wheels, but I've never seen it.
