A friend of mine has a 1998 Z28 with a STS kit with a pretty fat tune he did on HP Tuners and about all he can get out of it is 12.8's now keep in mind he also has auto,3.42 rear, pacesetter LT,with ORY, kumho tires? I've told him a little bigger gear would help but he said he don't want to lose top end. What have you guys heard or experienced?

On an auto. I would go with 3.73. Anything taller and you will significantly lose boost time. Did he do all the neccessary upgrades like fuel pump, injectors, porfessional dyno tune.

Also I'm not much of a trans. guru but he may look into transmission modifications to help cut through the gears for faster acceleration.(possibly) With the STS kit properly installed, tuned, and fully operational he should be making around mid 400 HP @ 5psi.

yeah he did all the upgrades but no dyno time yet.

tell him to put a 3600 stall on that bad boy with around 2.5 STR and retune for the stall and slap on DR for traction, only 12.8 sounds like he is doing alot of spinning possibly, no need for gears and wont lose too much top end with stall as they typically lock up at 45mph trap speed may be low seeming but ET will be awesome, and watch him pull 12.1-.4 maybe even better, I have heard of most guys typically getting around 440rwhp on 5psi kit. but I personally dont have one.

tell him to get a stall like Wheeler said and to use header wrap on his Y-pipe all the way back to the turbo and if his headers are not ceramic coated then wrap them :ar:

I don't mean to but in on 1SSWFO's topic but why does everyone reccomend wrapping their exh. pipes? What are the benefits?

it helps the turbo spool up faster

helps keep the heat in the exhaust for a faster spool.

keep in mind your location, If live in an area with high elevation your time will not be as good as in other locations

what are his 60' times? And are you sure he has 3.42 in the rear because 3.42 didn't come in the autos. A Z28 would either have 2.73 or 3.23.

yeah he changed the rear gear to a 3.42 last summer. I don't know the sixty foot times though.
