Back when I was 18 I wanted a Trans-am but with no patience I bought a 1996 Mustang GT because I wanted a muscle car. I owned the civics and integra's with the enourmous cans on them I loved the car. I even ignored the fact that the factory PLASTIC manifold blew on it. And the fact my syncro's are broken, the car rattles at high speeds and shakes, the fact that it bogs in first gear with a new clutch, lets not forget the fact that its been "Found On Road Dead" 3 times now. I was beating ricers!!
Coming home from school there is this chick I see leave in a vert Trans-am and I wanted to take a peek at her so I speed up flooring the car I get to her bumper and she nails the gas and leaves me about 6 car lengths with my little piece struggling to catch up and it just wasn't going to happen :denied: . Now Im mad so I go to pick on a new RSX type S and him and I go to about 100 and he was AHEAD OF ME he was F'in AHEAD OF ME THE WHOLE TIME I DIDNT EVEN CATCH UP.
Good news is my aunt may co-sign on this 01 trans am for me. Pray for me

Good luck. It must be frustrating for you not being able to catch people on the street. Even when you're just trying to check out the driver.
Don't worry, that wont happen much if you get an LS1. After you get it, you're only a few mods away from being able to hang with about anything you'll see on a day to day basis. No more hot chicks in hot cars running away from you.

I have all these ambitions of doing mods to it but I don't think I can because i'll be paying on it for quite some time lol. Mogs Ford really messed up with the GT's until recently, I should of done my research first.

Mine was 16,000 and I used a $2,000 car trade in for it. So basically $14,000. You can find Autos very cheap if that's your thing. I HATE automatics, so I deffinetly prefer to pay more for 6spd.

Yeah my co-signer is way the hell in North Carolina tho. God I wish I had credit. She will be here Saturday.
I was told by Jeff at Carolina Auto Masters that there is something up with the electronics on 97-98 LS1's, something about them being hard to tune. For best value, I would look at a 99-02 Z28 or Formula. But, if you can't live without an SS or WS6, then go for it, but you will pay extra, on yearly taxes and initial price.
Don't be scared of mileage. Mine had 88K on it, full bolt-ons, and gears, got it for 8K. I have done many doughnuts, took it to the track several times, and a sh*t-ton of street racing. I pulled old nitrous wiring out when I put a new CD player in it. She has been abused, then I laid down abuse for another 12K miles.
Result? Not a drop of oil anywhere, not a single tick, purrs like a kitten, no smoke whatsoever. When I put the heads on it a couple months ago, there was little, if any, wear on the cylinders. Gotta love that LS1.
The rear-end has crapped on me twice though, why does there always have to be a catch?

I have an LT1 and have still never had any trouble passing anyone I want! Chip, filter, exhaust, shift kit, and posi and boy does she go! I've done 148 mph like its nothing and the only guys to even challenge me were one guy in a 1995 Z28 (with my buddy in the car I just about ran him over with him starting first, no room to pass) and another guy in a Saleen S351, whom I didn't get to find out an outcome. But seriously, the average car on the street can't compare to any f-body with more than 300 horsepower. It's an awesome feeling.

That must be a one of a kind motor. The vtech changes to a second cam profile. I don't think you can have 3 of them.

I know there is a 3 stage one, but I don't think it made it's way to the US yet. I had a S2000 and when the Vtec kicked in at about 6500 rpm's it was almost like hitting a nitrous button. The power kicked way up and the sound of motor was like hitting high blend on a blender. That was only a two stage. 1st for normal driving and 2nd for high rpm.

the vtec kicks in EARLIER there isnt a 2nd one..LOL...my car before this one was an 03 rsx-s.......there 2600 lbs....quick car but no comparison to an ls1.....with the mods described above.....intake,exhaust,hondata your talking about 225-230 horse ...nothing spetacular......they dont take to mods like an ls1....honda pushed them nearly to there limits out of the factory....even when strapping a jackson racing supercharger to one your only taking 260-270 horses with full bolt ons as well.....would take that much in mods just to KEEP up with a completely stock ls1`.........i never did and never would race an ls1 in my rsx when i owned it...would just be stupid.....got my ass handed to me by an integra type r from a highway roll though.....lol....doing abotu 130 this guy all of a sudden walked the shit out of me ..we were nearly even till that point......nitrous?????? hehe

i think a 2600lb car with 260-270hp to the ground can take a stock ls1 that weighs 800 more lbs and has only bout 40-50 more hp

ever heard of tourqe steer????? was bad at STOCK levels...and its not nearly as aerodynamic as the z....and a STOCK z is closer to 350 flywheel horse compared to the 260-270.........a stock 6 speed ls1 would take it hands down......off the line AND top end ..and thats with 5k plus worth of mods to the rsx with NO supporting mods

3. Don't wreck it!

Actually its like
1) Get it!
2) Pay it off!
3) Mod it!
4) Don't wreck it!
One more thing, my friend has a 06 STI and he swears he will eat me alive. Will the WS6 take him? All it has is SLP lid and LM.
Roastem
02-01-2007, 12:59 PM
I don't know dude, I heard those new STI's are pretty damn fast stock. If he has mods, he might be in the 12 sec. range easily.
Race him from a roll, especially since you haven't raced your car a lot. If it's an M6, then you will have traction issues with stock tires in first and second. Up to 60 mph it will spin like mad with stockers.
I would run him up to at least 120 or 130, so if you are slipping and sliding at the beginning, you still will have time to run him down. I think 100 plus is usually LS1's home field advantage. (I know, its Superbowl time)
JHayesLS1
02-01-2007, 01:01 PM
He went 12.9 at the track...that car is a beast for a 4 banger.
Roastem
02-01-2007, 01:05 PM
Oh damn, race him from a 30 mph roll and don't let off till 130, you should put a couple car lengths on him. But you will prolly be neck and neck at around 90 mph, then you will pull him like a choked chicken.
JHayesLS1
02-01-2007, 01:12 PM

To clarify, yes I meant engine horsepower, not rwhp; I figure between 320 and 340 at the crank, nowhere near an LS1 with the same mods, but fun just the same! The car is for sale, but if I keep it forced induction and a forged stroker are in the future for sure! There's something to be said for modding your first performance car, and i'd like to be able to say that I made my power with the same basic engine that came in the car, instead of swapping to the newer Gen III/IV smallblocks.
RJWZ28
03-28-2007, 10:25 PM
oh and totally don't race that STi from a stop, do it from at least 35-45 mph, I can't punch it below 30 mph with my shift kit, rear gear and little mods, and if I race from a stop I don't hook up 'til I pass 40 mph. LT1s have more torque off the line (peak torque is at lower rpm) but the LS1 will have more guts and even less traction; you'll get spanked unless you take that STi into the triple digits!
JHayesLS1

Man yesterday at the auction a 98 white Trans am came through non WS6 and auto, car was immaculate....70k miles...sold for 6 thousand. If it had been a stick i would of been a fellow LS1 owner, I'll buy my WS6 hood later, Im sick of waiting for my Trans am lol. My bud with the STI just rear ended someone because he was trailing them to close, so its out of action for a while, Monday is another day at the auction wish me luck!

Don't get a 97-98 LS1 powered car if you can help it. The guy at Carolina AutoMasters, who tunes these things all the time, said there was something up with the electronics and they were hard to tune. Get a 99-02 F-bod if possible.
