View Full Version : freeway roll against evo 9

Posted up awhile back about two very close kills on roll and dig races against two different local evo 9's in my 98 Z28. These were very close races with me coming out victorious every time.
Well now I was going out of town for the holidays when I get lined up on the freeway with nothing but open road against a brand new blue Mitsubishi Evo 9! I was like sweet, I had already barely beaten those previous evo's at a dig on only street tires in my camaro so i was like sweet I'm gonna put a serious thrashin on this guy on the freeway. Sure enough we line up with three honks on a fourth gear 80 roll. I honked three times and wait for him to hit it first, I hit it and immediately jump out about 2 cars, he kinda hangs back there with me for a little bit and then I just started pulling hard above like 120 he stayed in it cause he was still back there but I put bus lengths on him by 145 and shut it down. It was awesome i pulled on him hard. Next I slow down and wait for him and slow to about 60 for a third gear roll to give him a little chance. I honk three times again and we punch it together and I pulled a car immediately and then he hung on my bumper but once I got to fourth I just started pulling away and put bus lengths on him again. No replacement for v8 horsepower on the freeway! My car has lid, free mods, muffler, smooth bellows and shifter.

Uh-oh here I am, the EVO guy :)

Good kill though, sounds about right. You have the edge for sure even stock, and since you have some small mods, definitely no chance for stock EVO on freeway. :)

The LS1 has more than just an "edge" on a stock Evo on the highway. Its no comparison, we're talking about a 240WHP 4 banger sedan vs. a 310WHP V8 with better aeordynamics. Thats a joke, I pull stock Evos (8 or 9) like they are going backwards

they are like 150-200lbs lighter and it does effects.. not much but it does.. LS1 definetely kills those from a roll but give them some credit man.. you are saying you kill them like they are going backwards.. i think they are little cars with HUGE balls..props from me..

That is an insignificant weight difference, and isn't noticeable at highway speeds.

I'm not giving them any credit they don't deserve, its an ugly little riced out 4 door sedan with a turbo, they are plenty of much nicer cars that are even faster, for less money.

They don't have any "balls" at all...its a 4 cylinder..its got about as much low end power as a Civic, they only start pulling once the turbo spools. Sorry but thats not what I consider a performance vehicle, its a riced up econobox that happends to be quick. No props to the Evo from me.

Riiiiiight. Come down and race my friends stock 2005 EVO anyday, we will video tape it and make a real comparison. Id like to see how hard you pull it from a roll... Im being serious. Your MODDED LS1 vs stock 05 EVO from a roll... You dont have to race me dont worry. :yup:

I pulled stock LS1s from a roll like theyre going backwards too. Congratulations.

I also have a stock EVO9 with just a flash too. We're waiting to do some real comparison tests, enough talking already.

now i have to disagree with you.. from a dig awd is a different story but i can't see a stock evo pulls on a stock LS1 from a roll.. evos are little fast cars but not as fast as LS1s from a roll..

My buddy has a 06 STI with full turbo back exhaust and he got it tuned somewhere, we drove it off the lot with him when he got it it doesn't take but an exhaust and a tune to make those little cars destroy about anything out there. Another guy we hang out with has an EVO that will hang with a Hayabusa..

That be fine with me, but I was talking more stock vs stock, since that seems to be the core of the argument. Your 98 is cammed, stalled, etc. Youd be a good race for me though, but not a stock or just flashed one :)

Not sure if Wes is running a stock LS1 or not, but being that so many are quick to try and call his bluff (basing this from these endless arguments I keep encountering with you guys, of course), I'll gladly run in his place..... :D

I need to update my sig, the '98 has more to it than just that, including intake and heads. If you want to race the LS1 this weekend, let me know, as I need to replace the tranny's mount bolt first. The '92 though is ready to go, and we can meet up anywhere on Route 9 tonight. If you video it though, be sure to have your camerman exclude my plate, for obvious reasons.... ;)

Wes has intake, exhaust, gears and something else. Light bolt-ons. I want a stock LS1 or one with small mods to race my friends stock and near stock EVO for comparison reasons.

So youre 98 has heads/cam, fast 90/90, stall, yada? Did you run it at Etown yet with the setup. Also, you dont really race on Route 9 do you? If we did run I prefer a roll-on because of the cold weather

What does that mean? Wes has been talking a whole lot of smack and I called him out on it. He declined to race me because since he is only lightly modded it would be a massacre. I never call anyone out unless there is a barrage of smack talking, which in this case there was. I now asked him instead of racing me to come race some near stock/stock EVOs for comparative reason to back up his claims. Very simple. :)

good thing the 09 camaro will possibly be out in late 08, with a 6.2 450 HP motor, for less $$ than a ricer or a mustang. Camaro's will rule again shortly, and we won't need much to catch that shelby either.

Can you please quote your source for the specs on the 2009 Camaro? Specifically, what version the LS engine will it have and what will the base cost be. Also, please post the cost of a base 2009 Mustang so that we can see for ourselves that the 2009 Camaro will be cheaper.

And please post your source.

Yes, the weather has been cold as of late, but still averaging between 50-60 degrees nonetheless. Yes, my '98 has a H/C/I, along with a stall. Been racing my 3.8 Turbo as of late, so no.... haven't got any times with the newer setup from the '98. I try not to race on the "Safe Corridor" infested Route 9, but will always make an exception, when needed. :D

hey mavin,

http://www.chevycamaronews.com/

That's some pretty old news to be called "breaking news".

Do you know who Scott Settlemire is? If you don't, I won't even bother with this anymore. Suffice to say that if you do keep up with the new Camaro, you would know what his comments were on the Saleen story that you (and others) are referencing - and you'd know their significance.

The bottom line here is that you don't know what the Camaro will cost, you don't know how much HP it will have, you don't know what the 2009 Mustang will cost, nor do you know anything else about it.

Simply put - you don't know. But we all knew that.....even if you didn't.

Really? My goodness - your credibility is certainly growing with each post. Lets look at just one year, 2002, the last year of the Camaro and compare that to the Mustang.

2002 Base Mustang MSRP = $18,080
2002 Base Camaro MSRP = $18,415

Source: www.autobytel.com

That's just the latest example - we can go through others, if you like. Bottom line is that the Mustang and Camaro were almost always comparably priced.
