Wont shift into 3rd or overdrive 99 T/A

i was driving home tonight on the expressway, punched it a couple of times and car was as normal n fast as ever. then right before i go to get off the expressway the tranny goes to shift into 3rd and instead just revs up high so i let off the gas asap. put the car in second, goes in gear fine, try puttin it into 3rd and drive and all i get is revving until the tranny drops into second. ANY ideas?? i checked tranny fluid it seems ok doesnt really smell burnt. im in for the night so i got posterboard under the tranny and rear end imma check tomorrow to see if anything leaked out overnight. Any help is appreciaed to get my bird back runnin like it used to.

Its possible your transmission is going out. When automatics bounce the rev limiter and just rev like that, its usually a good sign that its time for a rebuild.

ive heard mixed things bout rebuilt transmissions. would it be better to go new or with a tranny swap over an HD rebuild with shift kit n everything????
