I know a kid who spun the main bearing in his lt1 like 5 years ago, and was was wondering how hard it is to do, and how how can you tell if you have?

do a burnout at redline for 1 minute, that'll do it, i think as long as you keep your oil changed, run premium fuel , keep up on the basic maintenance and it'll be really hard to do

Using heavy oil to boost pressure can starve the bearing surfaces under high load conditions, especially in an engine that has not been fully warmed. Using the proper weight oil and a synthetic if the engine is pretty leak free makes for good insurance. The LT1 has had a reputation for this but not to the extent of considering it common.

so if I do a donut and bounce it off the limiter a little it wont cause any permanent damage?

just dont get into a habit of it, limiters are there for that reason

dont do donuts..its hard as hell on the rear more then the engine, yea i know they are sweet but your rear taking a major shit and you just there not being able to moke isnt.. take care of the 10bolt ..alot

floor it at like 500 rpm going up a hill and change gears keeping the rpms really low...

ok thanks for the info guys, and i'll lay off the rear end for a while

I did that in a '79 malibu w/ a 327 I used to have. I was in the pits at IRP between rounds, and my engine started squealing like a belt slipping. Before we could figure out what it was, it quit. Long story short, My next pass a main bearing seized, and broke the crank. I was just about to hit 2nd gear @ 7800rpm when it snapped. Needless to say once I got it stopped I looked back , and saw most of the shortblock internals laying on the track...:Puke:

By the way, I had just put straight 50 weight Valvoline in it that morning, because I noticed my oil pressure wasn't as high as it used to be....

no no no, that will bend your pushrods

I don't know how hard it is to do but I did last Saturday. I ran up to 132 mph in drive and shifted to O/D and I noticed that the oil pressure dropped from the normal 40-45 lbs it held most of time to about 12 lbs. I have 118000 on mine and I changed the oil and filter every 3000 miles and I ran full syn. Like the guys said prior to me stay away from the donuts it does kill the rear. As for the rev. limter it is there for reason normal small blocks are good for 6000 rpm but after that they are crying.

 i believe they are screaming to stop not crying...

doesnt nascar use small blocks? yet those bitches rev to 10k

but i also believe that they rebuild the engines every race. so even for a race engine the tear of going 10k is intense.

crying and screaming after 6,000? I revved my 4.6 2V to 7,000, and I rev my stock shortblock LS1 to 7,000.....

How does it bend push rods? heavy load on the engine at low rpm should affect the pushrods at all

 cool. these engines dont like too high of rpms.

Who told you that slim shady?

I rev mine to 6600 ALL the time.

I heard the weak point was the rod bolts and they are "supposedly" needed for a lot of 7K use.

i was refering to 7k+ i've herd it around. for a stock engine. unless i'm wrong.

That is what I call turnin' and burnin'. I remember back when you had to dump a LOT of money in a 350 to get it to turn 7K reliably. The LS1 changed everything. :worship:

so the ls1 handles 7k reliably?

No, I didn't say the LS1 handled 7K reliably, I said you had to dump a lot of money in the old 350's to get them to handle 7K reliably.

You can get a stock LS1 to handle 6.6K reliably. Sorry for the confusion.

how many years? and how many miles?

I spun a bearing in my last motor. Actually, I let a friend drive my car through the 1/4 and he spun it for me. Missed 3rd gear and pegged the rev limiter.

What I've learned from the experience:

1) Check oil often (especially before you go to the track)
2) Change oil often (3000 miles)
3) Stay off rev limiter if possible
4) Never let friends drive your car (he he)

If you do a cam swap (or pull the engine for any reason), its worth extra $110 to get a blueprinted LS6 oil pump too. The stock one is junk.

i kno fords ohc engines are designed for higher rpms because they cant produce anything at lower rpms as opposed to the traditional pushrod engine, at least thats how ive been told
